The holders of the Huddersfield FA Challenge Cup are out.

Golcar United who have a 12 from 12 win record in the West Riding County Amateur League came unstuck as they lost 1-0 to District I leaders Newsome.

Newsome started slightly the better in the tricky conditions after the previous day’s rain had left the pitch heavy. Midfielder Jimmy Meadows’s probing runs caused the Golcar defence some problems but Ash Connor came to Golcar’s rescue. The only goal of the game came in the 35th minute. A Paul Pyke free kick wasn’t cleared and Joel Bryce lashed the ball home from close range.

Golcar’s own set pieces were also causing trouble and Newsome keeper Ashley Whitaker had to tip a couple of efforts over his bar.

In the second half the referee saw an offence in the Newsome penalty area and a red card was shown to Golcar’s Conway but despite being down to ten men, it was Golcar who were on the front foot with Golcar’s John McAliskey always looking dangerous.

At the other end of the field, a couple of breakaways led to chances for Bryce and Anthony Haigh but they failed to take the chances.

As the match entered it’s last quarter more Golcar set pieces were putting Newsome’s defence under pressure but the back four of Buck, Maturine, Marshall and Brown held firm although in a goalmouth incident, Golcar had a strong appeal for a penalty but the referee Dave Midgley judged it was a case of ball to hand.

Newsome’s manager Steve Perrin revealed that in the week before the match he had worked his team hard in the build up particularly on the defending set pieces and this midweek work contributed greatly to the win.

In the other ties there were wins for County Amateur teams Bay Athletic, Honley and Storthes Hall but District League Division One team Holmfirth Town beat West Riding’s Lepton Highlanders by 2-0.

Both goals came from Jack Sewell, the first on the half hour mark and the one that made the tie safe only came in added time.

In the Huddersfield FA Trophy, two Reserve Division Two sides met when Heyside travelled to Holmfirth Town. The League fixture on the 13th September had ended 5-4 to the home side and by coincidence, the score was exactly the same last week.

Holmfirth Town Reserves would class themselves mainly as a first half team who hang on to leads rather than a side that comes from behind. Last week was completely different.

They were two down at half-time and ten minutes into the second half it was three behind. At this stage manager Carl Tabisz didn’t hold much hope of a comeback. It was even worse when at 0-3 they missed a penalty.

Then another penalty was awarded to them. They missed that as well that but at least scored from the rebound to reduce the deficit to two.

Things looked up a bit more when they pulled it back to 2-3 but shortly after, it was 2-4 with just twenty minutes to play. They narrowed the gap to one but it was in the last ten minutes that they game turned in their favour. The equaliser came in the 82nd minute and the winner in the 87th as Ash Thompson completed his hat trick.

The other two goals came from Adam Copland and Shaun Delpsey. Holmbridge’s match with Crofton in the Sheffield Challenge Cup went ahead – the week before it had been postponed because the referee failed to arrive.

Holmbridge soon fell behind but in the first half, a mixture of missed chances and good work by the Crofton keeper kept the one goal difference and Holmbridge even missed the opportunity to equalise from the penalty spot.

Eventually Thomas Short finished off a good move to level the tie in the 85th minute. There were no further goals in the first period of extra time but Holmbridge sealed passage to the last sixteen with two goals in the last ten minutes of extra time – one from Robert Parr and the other from Max Morley. They will now meet Denaby Main who beat Holmfirth Town in an earlier round.

There were two surprising results in Reserve Division I. At the start of play, Kirkheaton were second bottom with five points and Heywood Irish were third bottom with eight points.

The former were at home to second placed Shelley, while Heywoods faced leaders Newsome – but in both cases the sides in the bottom three beat the top two.

Daniel Stuart scored twice for Newsome but that was topped by Matt Henighan who scored a hat trick to claim the win for Heywoods. In the other game, Thomas Whitfield was on target for Shelley but two from Lewis Crank caused the surprise win for Kirkheaton.
