The four outstanding Round 2 ties of the Barlow Cup were completed last week and the cup team of the last few seasons, Kirkheaton Rovers, have done it again.

When they travelled to Diggle it was a case of fifth in Division One versus fifth in Division Two but as been proved many a time, League standings count for nothing in a one match cup tie.

Kirkheaton arrived at Diggle with just three subs and one of them was manager James Aylward. During the warm, a man was injured so it was done to two subs. In a goalless first period with few chances, the Rovers suffered a further injury which left only Aylward on the bench.

The first goal in the 60th minute when a corner was flicked on for Jacob Buchanan to score from close range. Shortly after, another Rovers injury and the manager took to the field but it made little difference as the Rovers went on to score another two.

Buchanan scored his second in the 75th minute and ten minutes later the tie was secured when Ryan O’Hara fired home from the edge of the box.

There was almost another surprise when two Division Two teams met. Top of this division, Heyside entertained bottom club KKS Spartans and when they met in the League, Heyside ran out 6-2 winners.

Just like the game at Diggle, there were no goals in the first half. KKS took the lead in the 51st minute when Tom Hall cleverly chipped over the keeper but five minutes later they were reduced to ten men. Within the next ten minutes, KKS trailed by 2-1. Two set pieces led to goals from Gary Schofield and James Leonard, the first in the 60th minute and the second in the 65th minute.

This appeared to clinch the tie for Heyside but KKS fought back and equalised two minutes from time. Chris Milby beat the offside trap and finished well. Despite the equaliser coming close to the end, KKS had two chances in the dying minutes but the tie went to extra time.

Heyside then took control in extra time but KKS defended well and they could even have scored on a couple of occasions on the break. In the penalty shoot out, a total of 22 penalties were taken. Twice KKS were in a position of scoring to win but the oppertunities passed by. The final tally was 8-7 to Heyside.

In the other two ties, Holmfirth Town beat Aimbry by 4-3 and Berry Brow had a 4-0 win over Cumberworth. The quarter final draw is Berry Brow v Skelmanthorpe; Hepworth v Holmfirth Town; Shelley v Heyside and Kirkheaton v Meltham.

Both teams at AFC Lindley have had a reasonable amount of success in the last few season but the 14th February will not live long in the memory of the club. The first team, currently top of Division Three, travelled to Moorside who are a respectable third in Division Four for their Groom Cup match. Lindley had mixed fortunes in the first half. On the credit side was the two goals from Luke Gilman that gave them a 2-0 interval lead but after 30 minutes, they were down to ten men.

Five minutes in the second half, Moorside pulled back but it did not look enough as added time started with the score still at 2-1 to Lindley, but in the sixth minute of added time, Moorside found an equaliser. In extra time Moorside took the lead but Lindley sent the tie to penalties with a goal from Lee Hamilton. His leveller was all in vain as Moorside went on to win 5-3 on penalties.

If that result was a surprise, then Lindley Reserves loss to Thornhill United Reserves in the Gee Cup was a major shock. Thornhill are second bottom of Reserve Division Four with only one win in fifteen matches but what made it such a shock was the 7-1 score line. The Thornhill scorers were Ian Purcell, James Smart, Josh Williams and four from Lewis Bryant. In defence of Lindley Reserves, due to the conditions generally over the last few weeks and specifically at their home ground, it was their first match since 29th November.

The quarter final draw for the Groom Cup is Wooldale or Brighouse OB v Paddock; 3D Dynamos v Junction; Moorside v Colne Valley and Uppermill or Scissett v DRAM or Almondbury Woolpack.

In the Richardson Cup, Kirkheaton Reserves could not emulate their first team and they were eliminated at the hands of Skelmanthorpe Reserves. A Dan Barber goal for Skelmanthorpe was matched by a Cavan Joyce-Smith for Kirkheaton but Skelmanthorpe went on to win 5-3 on penalties to reach the semi-finals. The other quarter finals still to be decided are Cumberworth Res or Hepworth Res v Meltham Res; Shepley Res v Holmbrisge Res; and Berry Brow Res v Diggle Res.

In League action, it was a day of coincidence for Britannia Sports. They have three teams and all three were involved in 3-2 score lines. The first team suffered a defeat at the hands of Newsome on Division One, a result which extends Newsome lead at the top. Britannia’s reserves earned all three points with two goals from Duane Dunston and another from Tom Green in their 3-2 win at Scholes Reserves. These are valuable points for Britannia in their efforts to avoid relegation from reserve Division One – they are currently second bottom.

Britannia A team could also have done with the three points for the same reason as their Reserves but they lost by that 3-2 score to Hade Edge Reserves.

There must have been some celebrations at Grange Moor last Saturday. The club lost a full squad at the start of the season and last season,s Works League team have been playing in Division Three. The reason for the celebrations was that the team recorded their first win of the season, a 2-0 victory over Paddock Rangers – it now leaves only Hade Edge A without a win.
