Battling Shelley have another chance in Huddersfield’s top local soccer competition.

Cup kings Bay Athletic were just 30 seconds away from retaining the FA Challenge Cup for a fifth successive year.

But the never say die spirit of Shelley earned them a dramatic 93rd minute equaliser at a rain-soaked John Smith’s Stadium and a replay.

It was only what Ash Berry’s team deserved. They had trailed to an own goal from the 33rd minute but certainly came to life in the second half.

And their onslaught of the Bay goal in the final 10 minutes not only brought the crowd of 495 to their feet, it brought a series of goalmouth scrambles which culminated in Liam Berry flicking the ball home from a tight angle.

Cue wild celebrations on the touchline and among a partisan crowd packed with Shelley youngsters.

They had little to enthuse about in the sluggish first half, in which neither side shone.

Shelley had the better of the opening exchanges thanks to lively link-up play between Berry and Gino Dignan.

But it was Bay who went ahead when a cross into the Shelley area saw Simeon Fletcher challenge for a high ball with Alex Low, who could only direct the ball into his own net.

The cup experience of Bay saw them control much of the midfield but it was a half of few openings.

The second half saw the tempo increase and both sides played a more direct style.

Bay’s experienced midfielder Steve Smith was instrumental in his side’s attacks and there were half chances for Nathan James and substitute Kitson Gayle.

But Shelley, too, came close with good efforts from Phil Livesey and Dignan.

In the end, though, it came down to that final few seconds of cup drama.
