Marsden and Heyside are the first two clubs to pick up District League silverware.

Heyside needed a home win to clinch Division Two and they faced third bottom club KKS Spartans.

A convincing 8-2 win gave them the three points and they will now play Division One football for the first time next season.

Originally they entered the League as Weavers Arms and the first trophy they lifted was the Division Five title in 1998/99 season.

This was followed the following season by the Division Four cup. They could not add Division Three to their list and, in fact, dropped back down to Division Four, but won it again in 2003/04.

Back In Division Three for a second time, they won the trophy the following season. A change of name to Heyside has not stopped the trophies coming their way. The Groom Cup was won in 2009 and now Division Two this season.

Marsden is a name that has been around the District League for many years.

However, a few seasons ago, they chose to leave the District League and join the County Amateur League, where they had plenty of success.

A group of ex-Marsden players broke away and formed the Royal Oak team and joined the District League last season, winning the Division Four title.

They merged back with Marsden at the start of this season and so the name of Marsden returned to the District League – and with success.

Last week they met the only side that could stop them winning Division Three, AFC Lindley. It was a close affair for much of the game before Marsden edged it out at the end with three-goal advantage through Michael Dolan, Jason Coleman and substitute Jack Mullin.

As a consolation, Lindley need only two points to seal the other promotion place.

In Division Four, there are 14 teams which means 26 fixtures and, consequently, a later finish to the season. But the fact that several teams are fighting for both the top and second spot means this division may not be sorted out for another two or maybe three weeks.

The current leaders are Almondbury Woolpack, but they fell to a surprising 7-1 defeat at the hands of 3D Dynamos.

With this defeat there was no change at the top, especially as the second-placed side Moorside did not have a fixture and third-placed Salendine Nook’s opponents, Calder Athletic, could not raise a team – the League Council will probably award the points to the Nook at their meeting on April 20.

That 7-1 win for 3D Dynamos still puts them in with a chance and Uppermill will not have written off their season. A 4-1 win at Mount still has them in touch.

In fact, it is so close that goal difference may play a part – at present, Salendine Nook have the edge in that contest.

In Reserve Division One, Newsome have led for almost all the season but, on Thursday, they dropped two valuable points in a 2-2 draw with bottom-placed Scholes Reserves.

Newsome are still in the driving seat but, should either Hepworth Reserves or Diggle Reserves win their games in hand, they can close the difference to two and one point respectively.

Reserve Division Two is very similar to Division Two in that Heyside and Skelmanthorpe are fighting it out at the top. Both had wins last Saturday.

Heyside beat Slaithwaite Reserves 7-0 while Skelmanthorpe Reserves had a 3-2 win at Holmfirth Town.

But the crunch match came on Thursday evening when the pair met. A win for Heyside would have probably settled the title in their favour but Skelmanthorpe Reserves won 4-1 and there is now a 10-point gap between the teams – but Skelmanthorpe have played four games fewer.

Reserve Division Three leaders 3D Dynamos Reserves are on for the double.

They are already into the final of the Gee Cup and in the League they need five points from five games. They will probably get three of those for their match when Moorside Reserves failed to raise a team.

AFC Lindley Reserves are the only team that are able to catch them but they must also keep looking over their shoulders as, should they slip up in their remaining seven fixtures, they may loose out on promotion to either Brook Motors Reserves or Cumberworth A.

In Reserve Division Four, the leaders Aimbry Reserves can be caught by Linthwaite Reserves if they grab 12 points from the five games in hand. They have won their last six games so it is not an impossible task.
