Huddersfield Town Ladies suffered cup final disappointment for the second time this season.

They were beaten 3-0 by Preston North End in the FA Women’s Premier League Plate showpiece at Guiseley.

Town had previously lost out to Sheffield FC in the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Women’s Challenge Cup final.

Preston started the brighter of the two sides without creating many chances.

Their best came on 12 minutes, but Town right-back Laura Windle cleared.

Town then started to dominate possession.

In the 16th minute, Emily Heckler went on a good run, beating a number of players, then a minute later a cross from Windle was scrambled wide.

In the 21st minute, Debbie Hastings had a strong shot well saved.

Liv Dacosta’s looping effort was just too high.

And despite further shots by Alarna Fuller, Heckler and Natalie Brace, Town couldn’t find a breakthrough.

In the 44th minute, they were caught with a sucker punch.

Preston broke away and the ball reached the byline with keeper Laura Carter covering her near post.

A cross-cum-shot by Yasmine Swarbrick looped over Carter and went in off the far post.

Town started the second half in attacking mode and Kate Mallin poked the ball agonisingly wide from a Heckler cross.

The Katie Nutter, Town’s player of the match, headed just wide.

Substitute Katie Lockwood had a shot tipped onto the bar, then a Mallin free-kick was headed against her own woodwork by a Preston defender.

A breakway goal by Keeleigh Savage in the 85th minute made it 2-0.

Mallin almost pulled a goal back from another free-kick.

But Preston made it three when their player of the match Chelsea Flanagan hit a screamer from 25 yards.

Town are in league action at Stoke City on Sunday (2.00).
