Newly-formed Thornhill United Under 14s have enjoyed an encouraging start to the season but went down 2-1 at Linthwaite in the RCD League Division 4B.

On on their first-half display against Linthwaite, however, maybe they could have been doing even better, but they were unable to reproduce their

form in the second half and the home side went on to take the three points.

Linthwaite struggled to find the form that has taken them into second place in the division as Thornhill pinned them back in their own half and the visitors almost took an early lead when Mohammed Raza’s corner found Luke Stubley but the striker’s shot rebounded from a post.

Thornhill keeper Nathan Townend did well to save a Lewis Critchley long-range effort as Linthwaite mounted a rare attack, but the home side continued to struggle and, only some fine Harry Beaumont defending denied the ever-dangerous Mohammed Raza.

The opening goal arrived unexpectedly when Jack Lewelyn’s right-wing cross floated just under the bar to give Thornhill the lead at half time.

Thornhill’s dominance began to fade after the break as Elliott Heap and Kelan Gorski began to take control in midfield.

George Hill went close to an equaliser when his shot, from Harrison Bromby’s pass, flashed just wide of the right hand upright, but Linthwaite were not to be denied and when a Harry Mayo corner was headed back across goal by George Hill, Joe Wilson was on hand to stab the ball into the back of the net for 1-1.

Townend pulled off a strong save to stop another Wilson effort and Liam Spencer and Ben McGreavy worked hard to keep the increasing Linthwaite threat at bay, but their resistance was finally broken when Wilson netted his second from an Elliott Heap corner.

Thornhill outplayed Linthwaite for much of the game but, if they are to make further progress they will need to maintain the standard right up to the final whistle.

Elsewhere, Hade Edge Under 11s moved into joint second in Division 5B following their home victory over Eccleshill.

The visitors failed to find the net as goals from Charlie Wadsworth (2), Ben Dalton and Aiden Micklethwaite earned Hade Edge a solid 4-0 win.

Connor O’Leary grabbed five goals as Skelmanthorpe beat Ossett Town in Division 4A of the Under 12s.

Jack Watson added another to give Skelmanthorpe a 6-1 win and move them four points clear at the top of the division.

Battyeford Under 12s tried hard to stall Meltham’s hopes of promotion from Division 5A of the Under 12s.

Goals from Charlie Butterfield (2) and Jenson Sayer set the target, but the visitors were not to be denied and replies from Fraser Hepplestone (2), Dawid Wojciuk (2), Oliver Aughton and Oliver Bingham ensured a 6-3 victory to keep Meltham second in the division.

Clifton Rangers were drawn against Rastrick in the second round of the West Riding County FA Under 14 Trophy.

Louis Sterling, Leon Horsfield and Nathan Whewell scored for Clifton to take the game between the local rivals into extra time, but with the score locked at 3-3, a penalty shoot out was necessary to decide the winners.

Rastrick scored four times from the spot but Clifton netted with all five attempts to secure victory. Clifton now face either Leeds City or Northowram in the third round to be played in December.

A draw was the most likely result as Netherton arrived at Rawthorpe to take on Dalton Dynamoes.

Dalton Dynamoes Under 16s retained their unbeaten start to the season but a fourth raw from six games still leaves them in third place in their chase for promotion from Division Two.

Netherton scored twice to keep the game on a knife edge but replies from Jack Bellwood and Kadell Smith ended the game at 2-2.
