The two sides who gained promotion from Division Four of the Huddersfield District League last season, Royal Oak and Colne Valley, met for the first time in Division Three – and last season’s champions won 3-2.

Their name last season was Royal Oak but this season, they are playing under their third name in three seasons.

They competed in the Works League under the name of MAC Athletic, but when they joined the District League, they changed to Royal Oak because the pub had been very helpful to the club.

This season, the side have merged with Marsden FC and the merged club play under the Marsden banner at Fall Lane.

Colne Valley took the lead within the first 10 minutes with a spectacular shot into the top corner, but Marsden replied with an equally good goal, a volley from Tom White.

Colne Valley restored the lead before the break and in the second half, the match could have gone either way as the play flowed from end to end.

Tom White netted his second to square the match at 2-2 and Marsden’s winner came in the last 10 minutes. A move involving several passes ended with the ball at the feet of Sam Boothroyd, who scored to give Marsden all three points.

There are three clubs level at the top, all on 13 points.

AFC Lindley lead on goal difference from Marsden, with Flockton in third and Scissett only a further point behind in fourth.

Just before the start of the season, it looked like Marsden’s chances were to suffer as last season’s captain, Sam Sykes, left to play at Meltham, but they have brought in two ex-Cartworth Moor players – winger James Knowles and midfielder Matt Loriman.

They have also added height to their defence with two 6ft 6in recruits, Nick Stubley and John Hunter, so joint managers Adam Frost and Neil Wood have confidence that a promotion spot is not beyond them.

In the First Division, it is a matter of status quo as all the top five clubs won their matches.

At the bottom, Scholes moved out of the relegation places with a 2-2 draw at Holmfirth Town. Scholes have always suffered when football fixtures overlap with those of the cricket season and that could be part of the reason why Scholes lost their first four games.

A win over Netherton and the draw last week may give them hope of a move up the table.

The draw with Holmfirth could have been predicted, because Holmfirth have become the draw specialists – this was their fourth in six matches.
