It did not take too long for Newsome to bounce back from their shock defeat against Netherton the week before.

They travelled the short journey to Leeds Road Playing Fields to face Heywood Irish and returned home with all three points in a 4-0 win.

Heywoods scored one own goal and the other three came from Anthony Haigh, Joel Bryce and Paul Pyke.

Not many clubs can overtake Newsome and a win today against Diggle would mean they would need only five points from five games – it must surely be a matter of when not if Newsome retain the title to record their third Division One Championship in six years.

A week later they will probably start favourites when they meet DRAM for a place in the semi-finals of the Huddersfield FA Cup, so there is plenty to look forward to for the supporters of Newsome in the final weeks of the season.

Netherton, the side that beat Newsome the week before, could not keep that form as they went down 3-0 at home to Hepworth United.

All of Hepworth’s goal came in a 23-minute spell between the 55th and 78th minutes. Sam Wardill scored the first followed by Jamie Clayton and finally Ryan Silvester.

So Netherton’s good win previously looks like being in vain. Their only hope is for Berry Brow to keep dropping points.

They lost last week to Holmfirth Town by a 2-1 scoreline. The Brow looked to be heading for a point as they were level at 1-1 going into added time but Sean Hazelden scored Holmfirth’s winner in the second minute of added. The Brow are only three points behind Netherton but have played four games fewer.

Bottom club Scholes had a meritable 1-1 draw with Diggle, but the two points they dropped means relegation to Division Two is now unavoidable.

In Division Two, second-placed Aimbry had an open date but all the other three challengers for promotion played and won and none conceded a goal.

Leaders Heyside scored one in each half in their 2-0 win against HV Academicals. Josh Briddon was the scorer in the first half with James Leonard adding another in the second.

The other two challengers both registered 1-0 victories and both had to be grateful for a player with the Christian name of Liam. Liam Dyson scored for Skelmanthorpe in their 1-0 win over Honley while at Slaithwaite, a Liam Dobson goal gave Kirkheaton Rovers all three points.

Heyside now have a six-point gap at the top over Skelmanthorpe, with both having six to play. Aimbry are one point adrift of second place but have played one game more than the two above them. Kirkheaton also have six to play and are four behind Skelmanthorpe.

The teams have to meet some of each other but Aimbry’s fixtures could decide who is top or second. They have five to play but included in those are matches against all the other three.

At the bottom, KKS Spartans recorded a 3-1 win over Meltham which takes them off the bottom spot for the first time since the early weeks of the season.

In Division Three it turned out to be a good day for Marsden. Goals from Buddy Cox, Sam Boothroyd and Tom White earned them a 3-0 win at Grange Moor.

Marsden could have been expected to win that match but they would have been pleased to see that their nearest rivals, AFC Lindley, had gone down by the same scoreline to Brook Motors. Because of these results, Marsden now have a six-point lead with only five games to play.

Although this was a setback to Lindley’s chances of the title, they are still firm favourites to gain promotion. Third-placed Brook Motors cannot catch them while fourth and fifth-placed Upperthong and Flockton have a chance on paper, but will have to win almost all their remaining fixtures.

At the bottom, Grange Moor are virtually doomed but Hade Edge, Wooldale and Paddock will be holding a joint sigh of relief.

With DRAM withdrawing, only one side will be relegated, otherwise as these three are locked together on 14 points, there would have been some anxious games.

In Division Four, leaders Moorside had a narrow 3-2 win over Thornhill United while second-placed Almondbury Woolpack had a slightly bigger win at Junction. Tony Wales grabbed a hat trick in their 4-2 win over Junction.

Woolpack have a game in hand over Moorside and should they win that, they will go top on goal difference. But both can be caught by Salendine Nook.

The Nook lost for only the second time in the League this season with a 5-2 defeat at Uppermill, however, the Nook have still games in hand which could take them to the top.

And Uppermill must still be feared. They have 10 games to play but can get to within a point of both Moorside and Woolpack.
