Due to the weather conditions, the games in the Huddersfield District League were down to just 19 matches played last week and as only five home sides won, one drew and the rest lost, some of the home teams must be wishing their games had been called off as well.

Nine of those played were in the League Cup competitions and there were two home winners – Kirkheaton Rovers Reserves and Moorside Reserves.

The Barlow Cup is falling a little behind with two First Round fixtures still to be played – Scholes v Skelmanthorpe and Holmfirth Town v Newsome.

But at least three clubs have already reached the last eight.

Hepworth had been beaten by Linthwaite but at a Management Meeting, Hepworth were reinstated and they join Meltham and Shelley.

The latter beat Heywood Irish last week at Leeds Road and were 4-0 to the good at the break before eventually winning 5-0.

The only tie played in the Barlow Cup was also at Leeds Road where Holmbridge had a comfortable First Round win over KKS Spartans by 7-1.

Five players scored once and the only player to score twice was substitute Greg Killock who scored in the 65th and 85th minutes.

The Groom Cup is at almost the same stage as the Barlow Cup with two First Round games still to be played – 3D Dynamos v Flockton and Uppermill v Cartworth Moor.

This cup has only two sides to the last eight – Paddock, another side who were reinstated, and Junction.

The Richardson Cup is yet another competition which has two outstanding First Round matches to be played – Scissett Res v Cumberworth Res and Scholes Res v Hepworth Res.

But it has more sides through to the last eight. Berry Brow Res were already through before last Saturday but they have been joined by Meltham Res, Kirkheaton Res and Skelmanthorpe Res.

Heywood Irish Res suffered as their first team as they went down 2-1 at home to Meltham Ath Res.

A Matt Hennighan goal for Heywoods still separated the teams with ten minutes to play but two late goals from Mark Denby ensured Meltham’s position in the quarter finals.

Reserve Division Two promotion hopefuls, Heyside Res, had to test themselves against Reserve Division One opposition in the form of Kirkheaton Reserves.

Heyside scored three times through Partington, Molyneux and Headen but it was not enough as Kirkheaton managed four. Lewis Crank scored once and Ben Sykes completed his hat trick.

Kirkheaton now face another Reserve Division Two promotion hopeful as they meet Skelmanthorpe Res for a place in the semis after Skelmanthorpe beat Meltham A 3-1 last week

The Gee Cup completes the competitions that has two first round matches to be decided – Diggle A v Hade Edge A and Flockton Res v Uppermill Res.

With some of the above matches being postponed on two occasions, the League rule allows the Management Committee to compel the home side to find a suitable alternative ground.

In the past this rule has been used when a particular ground is in a much worse state than all other grounds in the area. At the moment, the possibility of finding a “suitable alternative” is nigh on impossible.

The League clubs frequently use common sense and the home sides sacrifices home advantage and play at the away teams ground.

There were a few League games and in Division Two, Aimbry were due to play Slaithwaite at Linthwaite Rec. The ground there was waterlogged so both clubs approached the League.

Neither of the fixtures between the teams had been played so they agreed to switch the fixture – so it was Aimbry’s home fixture and the League obviously gave it’s blessing for a match to go ahead.

Aimbry were rewarded with a 6-1 win and the three points move them to within three points of the leaders but they have played more so they will have to rely on either Heyside or Skelmanthorpe slipping up.

In Division Four, Salendine Nook scored three without reply against Calder Athletic.

The Nook now move into third position just three points off joint leaders Almondbury Woolpack and Moorside, but the Nook have four and five games in hand of the two above them.

The Huddersfield FA Minor team is a representative team at Under 17 level who compete in the West Riding County FA Minor Cup against other areas of the West Riding.

On Tuesday, there will be a first for the Huddersfield team – it will be hosting a home match under lights for the first time.

This has come about because Shelley FC have kindly allowed the FA the use of their facilities at Storthes Hall – the match is against Leeds FA.

Both areas have already progressed to the semi-final stage, so this group game will determine who finishes top and who second.

However, games between these areas are as fiercely competitive as at the professional level and a competitive match is expected.

The game kicks off at 7.30pm and admission is £2.
