Huddersfield Town's inaugural junior tournament at their PPG Canalside training ground proved a massive success.

The two-day PPG Cup featured over 800 young players and 107 teams and the club were delighted it proved so popular.

Nine teams became the inaugural winners in the competitive six-a-side tournaments in every age group from Under 9 to Under 14, with Under 7 and 8 age groups taking part in a friendly tournament alongside.

The tournament was supported by Birstall-based PPG Architectural Coatings UK & Ireland, whose name is attached to sponsorship of the training ground.

In the Under 9 final, Westend Lions were runners-up to Great Harwood Rovers of Blackburn, losing 2-0 in the showpiece.

Westend Tigers were runners-up, too, in the Under 10 section, losing 1-0 in the final to Deighton, while another Westend team, this time the Lions, were beaten 2-1 by Cumberworth in the Under 11 event climax.

On the second day, Kirkheaton beat Hepworth A 3-1 in the Under 9s, while Battyeford were 3-1 winners against Brighouse A in the Under 10 final.

At Under 11, Hepworth B took the trophy with a 1-0 success against Honley B.

Lepton were the Under 12 title winners, beaten Rastrick 1-0, while Dewsbury Rangers A were victorious in the Under 13s, beating their own B team 2-0.

Norristhorpe A took the last trophy on offer in the Under 14 competition, beating Howden Clough A 4-1.

All players taking part in the tournaments received a medal, while participating clubs were very happy with the event.

Katrina Asquith of Clifton Rangers U10s to Town: “I would like to say how much we enjoyed the tournament.

“It was well organised and it was a privilege to play at Huddersfield Town’s training ground. We hope we can come back next year.”

Ricky Thwaites, of Westend Juniors, reported: “Please pass on my thanks to everyone who made the tournament such a success.”

Glenn Lamont, of Battyeford U10s, added: “Really enjoyed the tournament – it was great.

“Congratulations to the Canalside team for putting on a fantastic tournament and a memorable day for all involved.”

Rob Jepson, of Kirkheaton Juniors, joined those offering congratulations on twitter.

“Brilliant morning at the #PPGCup at @htafccanalside. Very well organised tournament – some great football played on first class pitches #UTT,” he tweeted.

Liam Ford of Norristhorpe Juniors added: “Had a great day today – my club happened to win the U14 team cup – thanks guys!”

PPG Canalside’s Operations Manager, Stuart Leach, commented: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank every player and team that made the first ever PPG Cup such a massive success; we hope to see them back again for an even bigger and better tournament next year!

“I would also like to thank PPG for its continued support of Canalside, and in particular this tournament; they added some very special touches to the event for players and attendees alike.”

Those included taking the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy to the event, which was also attended by Town club mascot Terry the Terrier.

Town’s Football in the Community programme staff also played a big part in running the event so well.
