Battyeford are through to the Huddersfield RCD Leagues Under 17 cup final after winning their semi-final against Queensbury 5-3 on penalties.

They contest finished 2-2 after extra time and it took a penalty shoot-out to separate the two side.

A cup final appearance will come as a welcome relief for the Mirfield side who are currently bottom of Division I.

Battyeford started well with Bradley Peel forcing keeper Matthew Smith into a fine save in the first minute but they were not to be denied and when the combination of Ryan Ramsden and Peel carved out an opening for Danny Hoyle to tap home the opening goal from close range with 10 minutes played.

Adam Holland went close for 2nd division Queensbury after half an hour, but his dipping free kick was tipped over the crossbar by keeper Harry Stead.

But with few further chances the score remained unchanged at the break.

The astute defending of Tom Ashley, Holland and Adam Delve kept the Battyeford forward line quiet but with Muhammed Navsarka, Danny Grogan and Connor Mackley doing the same job at the other end, goal opportunities were few and far between.

With Queensbury reduced to a few long range efforts the chances of an equaliser looked extremely bleak and something special would be needed and it arrived when Ben Norde floated an in-swinging corner kick across the face of goal where the swirling wind carried it into the top corner.

Another tremendous move between Mikey Smith and Danny Hoyle set up a good opportunity but keeper Matthew Smith was quick to smother Ramsden’s shot.

The deadlock was broken when a clumsy Battyeford challenge sent a player to the ground and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot from where Alex Haggerty gave Queensbury the lead.

The goal was a hammer blow to Battyeford who looked down and out until inspirational keeper Stead floated a free kick from the halfway line deep into the danger zone and Mackley stabbed home the loose ball to level the scores minutes and force the game into extra time.

With tired legs now taking a toll, spaces began to open up, the best of which fell to Peel but, the chance to grab victory with the last kick of the game flew over the crossbar and a shootout was necessary.

With a single Stead save the only difference after four penalties each, and Hoyle stepped up to net the winner for Battyeford.

This was a game that could easily have gone either way but, in the end, its Battyeford who no go through to the final where they meet either Littletown or YMCA who play next week.

Battyeford were also successful in the semi-final of the Under 16 Trophy competition where goals from Harry Barnes, Josh Csuk and a Ahmed Elmustafa hat trick were enough to give them victory over fellow third division side YMCA.

Battyeford now meet either Linthwaite or Dewsbury Rangers who play next week.

Three goals from Linthwaite provided a close finish to their Under 13 Trophy semi-final but replies from Logan Massey, Liam Read, Andrew Hopkins and Regan Metcalfe were enough to give Brighouse victory and a meeting with Honley in the final.

Woodkirk Valley competed the under 18 Cup Final line with a semi-final victory over Rastrick.

Rastrick were unable to find the net as goals from Reece Miller (2), Dominic Wright and Patrick Franklyn sealed a 4-0 win for Woodkirk who now face Howden Clough in the final.
