Heyside picked up the Barlow Cup for the first time with a controlled, determined performance.

And their 2-0 victory over Hepworth United at the John Smith’s Stadium could well be the first part of a league and cup double.

They currently head the table but three other teams, including Hepworth, can still take the title.

It was the resolute manner of Heyside’s final performance which earned them the Stadium plaudits. They scored twice, had at least three more efforts which could and should have been goals, and denied Hepworth all but one clear chance.

Heyside, who play on a 3G pitch, displayed their comfortable ball skills time and time again on the big Stadium pitch and were more than happy to play backwards and sideways to retain possession.

They made the breakthrough on 12 minutes. A snap shot by lively midfielder Gary Molyneaux was well-saved by Cameron Field but Josh Briddon planted an unstoppable header past the keeper from the resultant corner.

Heyside’s lively runners kept Hepworth on their toes and there were half chances before Mark Hopwood made it 2-0 in the 40th minute with a rising shot from 25 yards after good work by James Leonard.

The second half was more open as Hepworth brought on fresh legs and tried to exploit space behind Heyside. But the Oldham visitors were well-marshalled and rarely looked troubled.

Hepworth rallied in the final quarter with a good run by James Basnett bringing their best chance but the match ended with Heyside hitting the bar and seeing a shot scuffed inches wide.

The trophy was presented by District league president Frank Beaumont, accompanied by his wife Ann - making her 70th appearance at a Barlow Cup final.
