Wellington A of the Get Smart Kirklees Sunday League are proud winners of the West Riding County FA Sunday Trophy.

In the final at Woodlesford on Thursday, they thrashed opponents Northorpe United 6-0 to give them the perfect tonic for Sunday’s Get Smart Challenge Cup final against KSL rivals Dalton at Emley (10.30).

It was a good all-round comprehensive performance by Wellington on Thursday night.

They had the best chances in front of goal while being solid at the back when they needed to be mainly due to man of the match defender and captain Steve Marshall, who along with Farooq Hussain was in no mood to let their goal be breached.

Welly were ahead on 14 minutes when Paul Pyke neatly flicked the ball over his shoulder to give himself room to score from six yards.

It was 21 minutes when Jamie Jobarteh made it 2-0 when a Northorpe free-kick was intercepted and Pyke raced forward before laying on a perfect pass for Jobarteh to fire home.

Two minutes later Anthony Haigh struck a fierce 25-yard free-kick through a crowded box and although the keeper got a hand to it, he couldn’t prevent a third goal.

Haigh then saw a goalbound shot amazingly tipped over by the Northorpe keeper from point blank range.

At the start of the second half, Haigh tried a long lob over the keeper, but the ball flew over the bar. He also attempted the same later on, with the ball just landing on top of the net.

After a few minutes of the half Northorpe seemed to burst into life and launched some intense attacks and corners.

However they were foiled by a resolute Wellington defence, with some last-ditch clearances.

On 80 minutes after Wellington were well in control, two substitutes combined for a fourth goal – Eddie Hamlet with a tap-in after he was fed by Declan Thomas.

Five minutes from time Pyke rounded the keeper for 5-0 and, in added time, Hamlet grabbed his second, following a crazy mix-up in the Northorpe defence.

Pyke and Haigh had tested the keeper throughout and the busy Lee Bradshaw was unlucky not to score as well, when the Northorpe keeper smothered the ball as he looked certain to score.

Such was the gap in class, Wellington keeper Ashley Whitaker never had a serious shot to save in the entire game.

Now Wellington face Dalton in the Get Smart Group Challenge Cup at Emley on Sunday (10.30).
