Young footballers from all over the world will be in action at Storthes Hall for the next four days.

The Shelley Community Football Club are hosting the New Balance Cup, which is the largest event of its kind in Britain, and junior teams from 15 different countries have entered the competition.

The tournament has been played in Nottingham for the past four years, but sports company New Balance wanted to find a new stage to hold the tournament – with Storthes Hall Park being the new venue.

The tournament starts today with the Under 18, Under 16, Under 15 and Under 13 group games getting under way.

The Under 11 competition starts tomorrow and on Saturday the finals of all age groups and the Under 8, Under 9 and Under 10 tournaments are played.

Peter Kenyon, Huddersfield-based representative for joint organisers EuroWorld Sports Ltd, said: “It’s great to see so many people from all over the world visiting the town.

“We have over 1,000 people attending the six tournaments in the competition, so we hope they all go back with good memories from their stay in Huddersfield.

“We are hoping that we will see some good football to impress the many club scouts who will be there – as well as the spectators.”

There are teams from the USA, Europe and Africa, which gives the event a truly international feel, and there will also be match officials from as far afield as Scotland, Belgium and Pakistan in charge of the matches.
