Former Huddersfield Town keeper Matt Glennon believes his FC Halifax teammate Lee Gregory is more than capable of cutting the mustard at Football League level.

The striker who thumped in 32 goals last season and has just been named Conference Player of the Year is a confirmed target of Millwall and has been linked with a string of other clubs.

Town have monitored the progress of the 25-year-old, who combines his football with working as an electrician, ever since he moved to The Shay from Mansfield in 2011, but aren’t believed to be in the market for his services.

Sheffield-based Gregory’s goals helped Halifax win promotion from the Conference North in 2013 and reach last season’s national Conference play-offs, where they were beaten by eventual winners Cambridge in the semi-finals.

“Lee is a very good player, and the level of interest in him it’s no surprise,” said Glennon.

“He’s a very good finisher, good with his back to goal and good at bringing others into play.

“There were some who said he would struggle to make the step up from the Conference North, but he managed it with ease.

“If anything, he looked more comfortable at the higher level, and I think that would be the same in the Football League.

“As a club, we are resigned to him going, and we are all waiting to see where. It’s not straightforward, because Lee has a successful business, and it’s down to how that can be combined with playing full-time.”

While Gregory is set to go, Glennon, 35, is eager to stay at The Shay.

He is in talks with chairman David Bosomworth over a new deal.

Ex-Town loan striker Lee Ashcroft is the new manager of Longridge Town, of the West Lancashire League.

The 41-year-old ex-England Under 21 cap has also been in charge at Kendal Town and Northwich Victoria.

He played for Preston, West Brom, Grimsby, Wigan, who loaned him to Town in 2002, Southport and Kendal.
