Huddersfield Town are hoping for a third Football League divisional apprentice of the year award after Jake Charles’ nomination for this season’s Championship prize.

Joe Skarz was the winner in 2007 and Danny Broadbent the year after, while Matt Crooks and Duane Holmes have been shortlisted.

Wales junior international forward Charles is up against Derby’s Mason Bennett and Middlesbrough’s Bryn Morris.

The winner will be announced in London on Sunday, March 16, with educational attainment and disciplinary record being taken into account by the judges.

Charles, from Mirfield, played for Battyeford Juniors and Garforth Villa before joining Town in his Under 11 season.

This season he has scored 12 goals in 18 appearances for the Under 18s, who face Nottingham Forest at PPG Canalside today (11.00) and take on Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup fifth round at the John Smith’s Stadium on Friday, February 14 (7.00).

The grandson of Leeds legend John Charles, he has also made three substitute appearances for the Under 21s and trained with the first team on occasions.

Academy manager Mark Lillis said: “Jake works hard every single day both on the training field and on his off-the-field education.”
