Huddersfield Town fans have taken to social media after Jacob Butterfield joined Derby County in a deadline day deal.

The 25-year-old midfielder has joined the Rams in a transfer believed to be worth around £5m in total.

It represents a 1000% return on their £500,000 investment on the deal last summer that saw him join the Terriers from Boro - with Adam Clayton going in the opposite direction.

Derby's pursuit of Town's Player of the Season ruffled feathers at Canalside with manager Chris Powell expressing unhappiness with the midlands club's methods.

It is believed that there were at least five bids for the player, with the sixth over the weekend hitting the price Town would do business at.

Huddersfield Town manager Chris Powell said: "We wanted to keep Jacob here and he played well in games since the interest came in but equally he made it very clear to me and the chairman that he wanted to leave.

"In the short term the challenge as always is to replace him but that is part of football. The deal is good for us and in the long run and will let us make further additions to strengthen and improve.

Town Chairman Dean Hoyle added: "I said some time ago the player was not for sale and he was a key player for us.

"We all wanted to keep Jacob here but he made it very clear as soon as the very first bid came in a few weeks ago, he wanted to leave us there and then.

"He didn’t want to play for us anymore from then on with immediate effect.

"Equally, we made it crystal clear that for a transfer to happen, the deal had to be not just a good one but one we could not refuse.

"As the days have passed, we have rejected a series of further offers to try and retain Jacob at Huddersfield Town but with each bid the situation has become more and more difficult.

"Jacob has become totally unsettled by the speculation and more and more adamant in his demand to leave us.

"Finally, after another offer came in over the weekend we reluctantly reached an acceptable agreement on Monday.

"The timing is not what we wanted coming so late, but that was beyond our control."
