Huddersfield Town's season ended with a second dismal defeat in succession, leaving supporters wondering how head coach David Wagner will pep things up over the summer.

Former FC Halifax Town striker Scott Hogan must have enjoyed his return to West Yorkshire, scoring two of his side's three goals in 15 second-half minutes, Lasse Vibe getting the other before his fellow substitute John Swift struck late on.

Brentford made a flying start with an opener from Spaniard Sergi Canos, who is on loan from Liverpool, after just 21 seconds, and Town lost keeper Jed Steer to injury after a quarter of an hour, with Lloyd Allinson coming on.

Home hopes were raised when Jamie Paterson equalised five minutes into the second half, but Brentford, who put four past Town at Griffin Park in December, were soon back in front.

Teams

Town: Steer (Allinson 15), Smith, Whitehead, Hudson, Scannell (Lolley HT), Paterson (Bunn 75), Matmour, Cranie, Huws, van La Parra, Lynch.

Brentford: Button, Colin, Bidwell, Dean, Saunders, Hogan (Vibe 64), Woods, Kerschbaumer (Swift 82), Yennaris, Barbet, Canos (Clarke 68).

First Half

Town made five changes, including both full-backs, with Tommy Smith replacing Kyle Dempsey on the right and Martin Cranie in for Jason Davidson on the left.

And there was a new look up front, with Karim Matmour, Paterson and Sean Scannell all included. Rajiv van La Parra retained his place after the defeat at Bristol City but took over from injured Nahki Wells up front in the familiar 4-2-3-1 formation.

Lolley and Harry Bunn, like Dempsey and Davidson, dropped to the bench.

Cranie was badly caught out as Town conceded with fans still making their way to their seats.

His slip let in Canos, who accepted the gift and slotted the ball past Steer.

The afternoon did not get any better for the on-loan Aston Villa keeper. He was clattered by teammate Joel Lynch, as Town tried to clear from Hogan, then Cranie.

Steer carried on for a spell, making a good save from a Yoann Barbet header, but had to come off after 15 minutes.

That meant a debut for Allinson, who thwarted both Hogan and French defender Barbet.

Town's best effort came from Scannell, who weaved his way down the right, but his low shot was held by David Button.

Second Half

Town made an interval change, replacing Scannell with Lolley.

It was the newcomer who won the free-kick which was quickly taken by Dean Whitehead for Paterson to place the ball home after 50 minutes.

But Brentford were soon back in front. Town claimed offside, but Hogan carried on and gave Allinson little chance with a well-placed finish from inside the area.

Visiting keeper Button spared teammate Sam Saunders' blushes when he collected a turn-back from a Van La Parra cross which might easily have brought an own goal.

Then Hogan claimed his seciond and Brentford's third after 62 minutes, again beating the offside trap to round Allinson and finish cleanly.

Having taken his tally to seven goals in four games, Hogan was then replaced by Vibe after 64 minutes.

The Danish international needed only three minutes to make his mark, breaking into the penalty box and shooting past Allinson, who will be disappointed not to have made a save.

Town made their final change, Bunn for Paterson, after 75 minutes.

Chelsea loanee Swift completed the misery for the home fans when he shot home on 88 minutes.

Good Day

Certainly nobody from Town, but Brentford striker Scott Hogan will have enjoyed himself.

Bad Day

In his last game on loan from Aston Villa, keeper Jed Steer was beaten after 21 seconds, then forced off through injury after 15 minutes.
