Nahki Wells netted for the first time in seven appearances and Jamie Paterson scored his first goal for the club to earn Huddersfield Town a welcome third win of the Championship campaign.

Wells made the most of a sloppy back pass by MK Dons defender Kyle McFadzean to provide the breakthrough in a game which never really got out of second gear.

And on-loan Nottingham Forest forward Paterson slid home a pass by fellow substitute and Town debutant Flo Bojaj deep into stoppage time to cement the victory.

It was Wells’ third goal of the season, a second clean sheet on the trot for Chris Powell’s side – and their first at home in 12 league games.

Town kept the same starting side after Saturday’s goalless draw at Ipswich Town, but there were three changes by MK Dons, who beat 10-man Blackburn Rovers 3-0.

Ben Reeves, who scored twice, and former Town loan striker Simon Church, who got the other, dropped to the bench along with Rob Hall.

In came midfielders Samir Carruthers and Carl Baker as well as striker Nicky Maynard, a transfer-window signing from Cardiff City.

While Wales international Church missed out on a spot in Karl Robinson’s XI, ex-Town duo Antony Kay, at centre-back, and Diego Poyet, in midfield, both featured.

Town were on the attack in the opening minute, when Martin Cranie fed Sean Scannell, whose cross was headed narrowly wide by Ishmael Miller.

It was a positive start by the home team, and old boy Kay was yellow carded on three minutes for a foul on Nahki Wells as he surged forward.

Carruthers had a shot blocked as MK ventured upfield for the first time, then keeper Jed Steer had to stretch to hold Maynard’s deft chip.

Town were geared up for MK to play a patient, passing game, and so it proved in the opening period, with little goalmouth action to excite spectators.

MK forced three corners in close succession around the 23-minute mark, but Town were looking solid defensively.

Town won their first corner when David Martin pushed Miller’s well-struck low shot around his right-hand post – Dean Whitehead dispossessed Poyet to create the chance – but it came to nothing.

Scannell picked up a caution for a foul on Dean Lewington, then Cranie was booked after catching Carruthers.

Aussie left-back Jason Davidson picked up Miller’s pass and came close with a shot from outside the area, while at the other end, Baker was unable to profit from a miscued header by Joel Lynch, putting his effort well over.

A low free-kick from Emyr Huws which was saved by keeper Martin was the last act of a pretty tame first half.

And there was little sign of improvement at the start of the second, with neither side able to piece together a really threatening attack.

It took an awful slip by McFadzean for Wells to make the 58th-minute breakthrough, the striker needing no second invitation to profit from a poor back pass by the ex-Sheffield United man.

Miller flashed a shot over soon after as Town briefly came to life, but the game soon drifted back to its previous steady tempo.

There was controversy after 70 minutes as Jake Forster-Caskey clashed with Davidson but only picked up a yellow. Town’s Lynch was booked for his reaction to the incident.

Town replaced scorer Wells with Paterson while Scannell had a low effort deflected for a corner and MK’s Daniel Powell drilled a shot wide.

Teenage striker Bojaj replaced Miller in stoppage time, and threaded through the pass from which Paterson shot home for Town’s second and clinching goal.

"He stuck to his task and got his reward"

Huddersfield Town manager Chris Powell welcomed a third win of the season and a second consecutive clean sheet as his side notched a 2-0 home success over MK Dons.

Goals from Nahki Wells and on loan Jamie Paterson sealed a victory that lifted Town to 13th in the Championship table.Town boss Powell said: “It was a very good result in the end and I am pleased because we built on Saturday’s performance at Ipswich on what was a quick turn around.

“That is three wins in six games and one defeat and the players should be proud of it because they are actually on quite a decent run. Now we want to carry that on against Derby on Saturday and make it seven points from three games.

“MK Dons can be awkward to play against because of their possession-based approach, so we had to show good concentration and organisation and we worked hard to get through them.“The plan was to press and force them into mistakes and I am pleased for Nahki because he stuck to his task and got his reward.”
