Jon Stead grabbed the first goal of his second spell at Huddersfield Town to seal a sweet 3-2 derby win over Leeds.

The striker, who left for Blackburn back in 2004 and returned from Bristol City this summer, shot home in the 77th minute, just four minutes after Dexter Blackstock had headed Leeds level.

The visitors made a flying start with a second-minute opener from Matt Smith, but Town responded with gusto.

Danny Ward levelled from a well-worked ninth-minute corner, then a 62nd-minute own goal by Tom Lees put Mark Robins' side in front.

Blackstock had the Leeds fans singing, but they were silenced by Stead, and this was a welcome first win in six Championship games.

Town, who were playing their 2,000th home Football League game,  made four changes.

Defender Jazz Richards, midfielders Keith Southern and Duane Holmes and striker Jon Stead came in, with Southern making his first league start of the season and Holmes his full debut.

Anthony Gerrard, Calum Woods, Oscar Gobern and the suspended James Vaughan dropped out of the starting side.

And the absence from the matchday 18 of centre-back Gerrard, ex-Leeds midfielder Adam Clayton and striker Martin Paterson had the home fans talking.

Leeds were unchanged after their 4-0 home win over Birmingham and came flying out of the blocks to take the lead within 80 seconds.

Former Oldham striker Smith forced keeper Alex Smithies to tip the ball wide with a firm header, and then met Alex Mowatt's flag kick to nod in his fifth goal of the season.

But Town reacted well and were level by the ninth minute, when Southern won a corner and Adam Hammill caught Leeds by surprise with a deep delivery to Ward, who rifled in his second goal of the campaign.

Town had the better of the first half as Ward had another shot blocked while Hammill had an effort tipped over by Paddy Kenny.

Holmes made way for Sean Scannell at the break, and Ward came close with a header before Leeds midfielder Luke Murphy shot wide with the goal gaping.

The visitors were made to rue that miss even more when Town went ahead through Lees' 62nd-minute own goal, headed in from Hammill's cross.

Stead came agonisingly close to a quick follow-up for Town, but after rounding keeper Kenny, shot into the side-netting.

Leeds introduced new loan signing Blackstock after 72 minutes, and the Nottingham Forest striker made a sensational start by heading home Mowatt's free-kick with his first touch.

But Town weren't finished, and Stead fired home in the turn from Scannell's cross to cap a battling performance by both the player and his team.
