Well-taken goals by Nahki Wells, Jacob Butterfield and Joe Lolley meant Huddersfield Town got their pre-season schedule off to a winning start at Guiseley.

Last season's top scorer Wells and player of the year Butterfield both scored with neat low shots to put Chris Powell's side in control at Nethermoor.

Nicky Boshell pulled one back for the National League top-flight newcomers in the stroke of half-time to keep things interesting.

But Lolley lashed home a spectacular angled late effort to seal victory in what was a good work-out for both teams.

Team news

Town handed a start to trialist defender Martin Cranie, the former Barnsley skipper, who lined up on the right side of a three-man defence and looked tidy and composed.

But new arrival Kyle Dempsey did not figure, the midfielder being given time to prepare for the pre-season trip to Spain after only completing his move from Carlisle United on Friday.

Boss Powell pushed Tommy Smith up into midfield, with youngster Jack Senior also figuring alongside Butterfield and Duane Holmes.

First-half

His side made a lively start, forcing a couple of corners before trialist Guiseley striker Andy Gray, the former Bradford City player, tested Alex Smithies with a glancing header.

Town were looking the stronger of the two sides, however, and Sean Scannell gave young left-back Joel Thompson a torrid time.

Wells fluffed a golden opportunity from a Scannell cross before putting Town ahead after 31 minutes, making the most of a Holmes through ball to slot home.

Town were two up after 42 minutes. Harry Bunn's cross from the rightwent looping into the air before Butterfield showed neat footwork, then netted with an angled shot.

The lead was halved on the stroke of half-time when Cranie was ruled to have impeded Luke Porritt and Nicky Boshell sent Smithies the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Second-half

Powell rang the changes for the second half, with only Holmes and Bunn reappearing, and new signings Jason Davidson and Dean Whitehead both featuring.

Adam Hammill, back from his loan spell at Championship rivals Rotherham United, was unable to take advantage of a couple of early second-half chances, set up by Bunn, then Davidson.

Town took off Holmes and Bunn and brought on William Boyle, who had played the first half, and Sondre Tronstad before Joe Lolley bent a 20-yard free-kick wide.

Town's second-half keeper Lloyd Allinson made two good saves in a minute to thwart Mumya Munbaje and Gavin Rothery and keep his side's lead intact.

Lolley made sure of the win on 89 minutes when he worked his way into the penalty area from the right and powered his shot into the top left-hand corner.
