Nahki Wells booked his place in the starting line-up against Hull, but who will join him in Huddersfield Town's blue and white stripes remains a burning question after a frustrating 2-1 defeat at Barnsley.

Wells fired his side ahead on 20 minutes with a cracker, but a mistake by Kyle Dempsey gifted Sam Winnall a 33rd minute equaliser for Lee Johnson's League One side.

Chris Powell then watched a mix-up at a corner two minutes into the second half present Mason Holgate with a winner.

It marked a disappointing end to pre-season for Town, who still need to find defensive solidity and a much sharper cutting edge going forward.

They also need to sort out set pieces at both ends of the pitch.

Team news

There were two changes to the Town starting line-up from the Deportivo game, with Ishmael Miller getting a first run of pre-season in place of Jordy Hiwula and Joel Lynch returning to defence for Murray Wallace.

Adam Hammill was not included in the squad amid talk of him being linked with a move to Preston.

Town started in a 4-4-2 formation with Kyle Dempsey on the left and Sean Scannell on the right of midfield - Miller and Nahki Wells up front.

First half

Dempsey had a shot charged down in the sixth minute as he and Jacob Butterfield - against his first club - showed up brightly.

On-loan 17-year-old Arsenal midfielder Dan Crowley then made a lightning dart through the middle for the home side before Wells made a similar burst from half way for Town, but again the shot was blocked.

Crowley continued to be a threat with his skill and pace and he had Alex Smithies diving to collect a curling effort on 15 minutes.

Five minutes later Town were in front after neat play on the left and, when Dempsey found Wells in the box, a couple of twists from the striker earned him room to score with a fierce left-foot drive into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Barnsley were level on 33 minutes when a back pass from Dempsey fell short and Sam Winnall took advantage to drive an angled right-foot shot past Smithies.

Butterfield was booked for encroaching at a corner after 38 minutes but, with a flag kick at the other end four minutes later, he almost created a goal for Lynch, whose flicked header was cleared off the line by Mason Holgate.

With the final kick of the first half, Crowley forced Smithies to punch his free kick away from under the bar.

Second half

Town made two changes for the second half with Joe Lolley and Jonathan Hogg replacing Scannell and Dempsey respectively.

But they were behind within two minutes of the restart when confusion defending a corner led to Holgate bundling the ball past Smithies at his near post.

Barnsley sent on Simeon Jackson and Conor Wilkinson for Winnall and Sam Watkins on 55 minutes, with Town still to create a second-half chance.

Crowley then got warm applause from the home fans when he was replaced by Paul Digby after 59 minutes.

A couple of minutes later, Powell sent on James Vaughan to replace Miller and the pitch was becoming increasingly slick as heavy rain took effect.

Butterfield fired a low drive straight at keeper Adam Davies as Town continued to probe, but the League One defence looked organised.

Indeed, Town had a let off at the other end in the 66th minute when Jackson was played in and his curling shot from 15 yards smashed off the top of the bar with Smithies beaten.

Martin Cranie, the former Barnsley captain, got a terrific reception from the Home fans when he went on for Tommy Smith after 72 minutes, but he was in the referee's book a minute later for a crunching late challenge on Josh Scowen.

Hiwula was also sent on for the final 18 minutes to press his claims

for a place in the starting line-up at Hull City.

Barnsley sent on Conor Hourihane and James Bree with 11 minutes left while Town opted for a three at the back formation when sending on Harry Bunn to play at left wing back for Jason Davidson with eight minutes on the clock.

Town went close to an equaliser five minutes from time when a Butterfield free kick fell to Lolley, but his close range effort was superbly blocked by Marc Roberts.
