There was no happy return to Charlton Athletic for Chris Powell as Huddersfield Town suffered a comprehensive 3-0 Championship defeat against his former club.

Powell, a popular former Charlton player as well as manager, was given a great ovation by the home fans in a bumper 25,545 crowd.

It included 2,151 Town supporters who had taken advantage of the London club's £5 admission offer, but they went home disappointed.

Set-piece specialist Johann Gudmundsson fired Charlton ahead with a first-half free-kick, then former Celtic striker Tony Watt notched a double after the break.

Powell made two changes to the Town side which beat Reading 3-0 at home on Tuesday as he made his first return to The Valley since being sacked as manager a year ago.

Striker James Vaughan and wideman Sean Scannell were back as injured top scorer Nahki Wells (shoulder) missed out and defender Tommy Smith dropped to the bench.

Conor Coady, who missed the Reading match through illness, was among the substitutes while full-back Jake Carroll also made a rare appearance in the squad.

Charlton had 17-year-old Joe Gomez in for injured Israeli centre-back Tal Ben Haim while highly-rated midfielder Jordan Cousins also returned.

Charlton began the game at a high tempo, but Igor Vetokele was unable to take advantage of a number of chances.

However when his fellow frontman Watt was fouled by David Edgar in the 34th minute, Gudmundsson took full advantage.

Town keeper Alex Smithies went the right way, but was unable to keep out the Icelandic midfielder's 25-yard effort.

Vaughan and Jacob Butterfield both had shots blocked while Ishmael Miller fired wide as Town responded while Charlton's Watt came close after driving forcefully into the penalty area.

Watt's first goal, fired home from Vetokele's 48th-minute pass, left Town facing an uphill task, but they did have a spell on top.

Miller had another couple of opportunities which came and went and a double substitution by Powell, with Coady and Smith replacing Edgar and Jonathan Hogg, failed to have any real effect.

Watt wrapped up the three points with Charlton's third goal, rifled home in the 72nd minute after another surging run into the danger zone.

Home substitute Chris Eagles game close to a fourth in time added on, but his cross-cum-shot was palmed against the woodwork by Smithies.

It was a first defeat in four games for Town, who brought on Joe Lolley for Harry Bunn in the 73rd minute, and they will aim to hit back when they return to London to face Brentford on Tuesday.
