Huddersfield Town were denied by a last-gasp leveller after Norwich City old boys Jacob Butterfield and James Vaughan combined to put them in sight of all three points with a stoppage-time strike.

And to rub salt into the home side's wounds, Vaughan was red carded when his celebration brought a second yellow.

Vaughan netted from Butterfield's cross five minutes into time added on, but the visitors were still able to conjure a leveller through substitute Jamar Loza in the eighth extra minute.

Failure to win, and Vaughan's dismissal, was desperately disappointing, but this was still another key Championship point as Town drew for the second game running and put the brakes on Norwich's push for the Premier League.

The Canaries came in search of an eighth win in 10, but had to come from behind twice after Ismael Miller fired Chris Powell's side in front for the first time.

A goal from substitute Wes Hoolahan levelled matters and made it 1-1 going what was signalled as five minutes of time added on.

Injuries forced Town boss Powell to make three changes, with Jake Carroll, Sean Scannell and Miller coming in for Jack Robinson (knee), Harry Bunn (hamstring) and Joe Lolley (hip).

It was left-back Carroll's first start since the Capital One Cup third-round defeat at Hull City in September 2013 and he found himself up against the tricky Nathan Redmond.

Town, with James Vaughan and Jacob Butterfield facing one of their former clubs, carved out the game's first real chance, with Vaughan picking out fellow frontman Miller, whose low effort was held by keeper John Ruddy.

There was controversy in the seventh minute, when Bradley Johnson forced Cameron Jerome's header into the six-yard box over the line, only for Town's players to head towards assistant referee Lisa Rashid, apparently claiming hand ball.

Referee Nigel Miller ruled the goal out and cautioned former Leeds United midfielder Johnson.

Norwich defender Sebastien Bassong hooked a shot over the bar before Ruddy showed smart reactions to tip over Joel Lynch's header from Butterfield's corner.

Ruddy made a more comfortable save from Town skipper Mark Hudson's header before being tested by Scannell, who twisted and turned his way into the area before unleashing a powerful drive.

It was Vaughan's turn to test the England stopper in the 36th minute when teed up by Miller. The Town man held off marker Russell Martin but Ruddy spread himself to make the save.

Both Graham Dorrans and Jerome fired off target before Town had a major let-off just before the break.

Jonny Howson picked out Gary Hooper with a low cross, but with the goal gaping, the former Celtic man scuffed his shot and the home side scrambled the ball to safety.

Johnson drilled a shot wide from Redmond's lay-off as Norwich, looking purposeful, created the first chance of the second half.

However the visitors were rocked in the 55th minute when Miller made the most of Butterfield's pass, eased his way past a couple of yellow-shirted opponents and beat Ruddy with a composed finish to put Town ahead.

Norwich responded through Wes Hoolahan, freshly introduced for Johnson, who tested Smithies with a curler from the right-hand side of the area which was heading towards the top left-hand corner.

Town got away with it on that occasion, but not in the 67th minute when Hoolahan, after neat work by Redmond and Howson, equalised with a well-taken low shot.

Powell replaced Carroll with David Edgar, who took up position on the right side of the defence, with Tommy Smith moving to the left.

Lynch was booked for a foul on Redmond before midfielder Oscar Gobern replaced Miller, who was given a great ovation by the home fans, while Norwich took off Hooper and brought on Tony Andreu, then introduced

Jamar Loza for Howson as they sought a late lift. Norwich's Martin was booked before the first of Vaughan's yellows for a foul on Hoolahan.
