Heroic Huddersfield Town battled back from two goals down with a Nahki Wells double to extend their unbeaten Championship run to six matches with a 2-2 draw at Portman Road.

The John Smith's Stadium side, showing three changes in a 3-5-2 formation, had plenty chances, particularly in the first half, but fell behind to goals from centre-backs Tommy Smith (21 mins) and Christophe Berra (55).

Boss Chris Powell made a double substitution on 63 minutes, sending on Sean Scannell and Harry Bunn for Jonathan Hogg and Lee Peltier, switching to 4-4-2, in an attempt to salvage something, and his side responded in style.

They were right back in the shake-up on 70 minutes when Grant Holt was dragged down in the box by Luke Chambers and Wells dispatched an excellent low penalty for his seventh goal of the season.

Town were now on top and Dean Gerken made a superb point-blank save to deny Bunn before Wells delivered the equaliser, nodding home Tommy Smith's cross on 82 minutes for his eighth of the campaign after neat work by Scannell.

Town had the best chances of the first half but were undone by a simple corner routine as Ipswich took a 1-0 lead into the break.

After failing to clear successive Teddy Bishop flag kicks, a third from Town's right in the 21st minute provided centre back Smith with a heading chance he directed firmly down and into the centre of goal.

Before that, Holt had had the best opportunity of the game on 12 minutes, prodding a shot wide from close range after being played in by Wells and Jacob Butterfield.

But Wells, too, missed a sitter after Holt had dummied a Paul Dixon cross, firing straight at keeper Dean Gerken from six yards before nodding the rebound over on 32 minutes.

Ipswich almost scored again on 40 minutes as Smith looked to pounce from a free-kick, but after the ball hit Alex Smithies' right hand post, he was able to gather on the line.

Wells responded with a cracking long-range volley in injury time, but Gerken clawed the ball away for a corner.

Boss Powell rang the changes for the trip to Suffolk, making three switches in personnel and opting for a wing-back system with Wells returning up front alongside Holt, playing for the first time since extending his loan from Wigan Athletic until December 28.

Bunn and Scannell dropped to the bench while loan man Jack Robinson was left out of the 18 in favour of Dixon starting at left wing-back.
