Huddersfield Town fell victim to Lee Tomlin's second-half double, and to make matters worse, lost striker James Vaughan to injury.

The scoreline failed to reflect the game, with Town coming close to a leveller after Tomlin drilled the home side in front on the hour.

His second came deep into time added on after Town keeper Alex Smithies went upfield for a corner and Boro broke on the counter.

Town boss Chris Powell made just one change in the wake of the 3-1 home win over Watford.

Oscar Gobern dropped to the bench as former Middlesbrough academy player Jonathan Hogg returned from suspension

But Gobern found himself in the thick of the action after just 23 minutes, with Vaughan forced off after being caught by Thomas Kalas.

Town had already had a couple of let-offs, with Kike hitting a post and Patrick Bamford taking the ball around keeper Alex Smithies, only to find the angle for his shot too tight.

The visitors were forced into a reshuffle after Vaughan went off, but Boro were unable to take immediate advantage.

The closest they came before the break was through a volley from former Town midfielder Adam Clayton which whistled over the bar.

Hogg was replaced by Lee Peltier for the second half, with Tomlin twice coming close as Boro made the early running.

The former Peterborough player finally made the breakthrough when he hammered home a 20-yard shot after more good work by Kike.

It took a good save by home keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos soon after to deny Jacob Butterfield an equaliser against his old club.

The Nahki Wells curled a shot against a post before twice being denied by Konstantopoulos as Town fought hard for a leveller.

Tomlin's second goal, which confirmed a fifth defeat in the last six away games for Town, was cruel on the visitors.
