What happened

Huddersfield Town fell victim to Sheffield Wednesday's late onslaught as head coach David Wagner suffered defeat in his first match in charge.

Town made a real game of it, and led through Sean Scannell's 53rd-minute header, but the Owls hit back with two in five minutes from substitute Lucas Joao and Kieran Lee.

Joao wrapped it up with a slick stoppage-time strike, with livewire frontman Fernando Forestieri having a hand in all three home goals.

Wagner made four changes to the Town starting side on duty against Leeds United last time out.

Tommy Smith was handed a first start in 11 matches at right-back, while Sean Scannell returned after a three-game lay-off with a hamstring injury.

Emyr Huws, fresh from Wales international duty, came into midfield, lining up alongside Dean Whitehead in a 4-2-3-1 system.

On-loan Middlesbrough winger Muzzy Carayol was the other new inclusion, with Murray Wallace, Joe Lolley, injured Phil Billing and Jason Davidson dropping out.

Australian international Davidson wasn't considered because of his absence during the international break, his place at left-back going to Kyle Dempsey.

Dempsey and Smith continually pushed high up the pitch as Town put Wagner's full-throttle tactics into practice for the first time in a match.

Chances were scarce in the opening period , with just one on target for each team.

Wednesday keeper Keiren Westwood blocked a well-struck Dempsey shot with his legs, while a tame effort by home midfielder Ross Wallace was
comfortably saved by Town's Joe Murphy.

Tall frontman Atdhe Nuhiu proved a tricky opponent, winning a number of free-kicks, but Town were able to deal with his threat up to the
break.

It took a brave block by Murphy to thwart Forestieri after a poor Mark Hudson back pass early in the second half.

And Town fans went from relief to delight as Scannell dived to head home a Dempsey cross and out his side ahead.

The lead was preserved as Dean Whitehead cleared off the line from Wallace soon after while Town's Huws was twice denied by Westwood.

However Wednesday began to crank up the pressure and levelled in the 78th minute when Joao thumped home the rebound after Forestieri's shot was blocked.

Town substitute Joe Lolley cleared off the line before the home side went ahead as Lee shot home after another Forestieiri effort was saved
by Murphy.

Wednesday's second goal

As Town pressed forward going into additional time, Joao made sure of victory when he curled home a 20-yard shot from Forestieri's lay-off.
