Eddie Howe will bring his Bournemouth side to the John Smith’s Stadium on the opening day on August 9 aiming to kick-start another successful season but expecting an even more competitive Championship than last term.

Promoted in 2013, the Cherries finished 10th last season – their highest-ever position since joining the Football League in 1923.

Huddersfield Town won the first of their celebrated hat trick of league championships in Bournemouth’s first league season.

They didn’t meet the Cherries until 1973-74, following relegation to the original Third Division (now League I).

The clash at Leeds Road ended 1-1, with Alan Gowling netting from the penalty spot for Town in front of a 5,360 crowd.

The home team also included the likes of keeper Terry Poole, Terry Dolan, Bobby Hoy and Jimmy Lawson.

Harry Redknapp was a player at Bournemouth, with John Bond their manager.

There have been plenty of further meeting over the intervening years, with Town winning 16 of the 44 league clashes, including a 5-1 home success last season, and the Cherries 12.

After a slow start – James Vaughan claimed a hat trick in Town’s August victory – Howe’s side found their feet.

They earned a revenge 2-1 home win over Town in January, and chalked up a total of 67 goals, 66 points and 11 away wins, all club records for the second tier.

Howe, in his second spell at the South coast club after also managing Burnley, said: “I think it is going to be a tougher division next season.

“There are three strong clubs coming up from League I and both Brentford and Rotherham are having a go financially and have invested quite a bit of money.

“Together with Wolves, they will certainly add to the strength as will the three which have come down, Cardiff, Norwich and Fulham.

“We need to be prepared for a better division, harder games and are going to have to be better ourselves.

“There are no surprises for me and it is going to be a very strong league, as it was last season, but perhaps even stronger.

“It is added pressure for us because we performed so well, especially in the second half of the season.

“It is not only the expectations from everyone else but the expectations we put on ourselves are very high as well.

“From our perspective, we have to check those with a few things like how strong the league is and how much money is being spent by the relegated and promoted teams and the clubs around us.

“We are not just reliant on money and have to be very smart with how we work, what we do and how we go about things.

“That has got to be our competitive edge, not money.

“I am aware of how difficult it is going to be to beat last season but that has to be our aim.

“There is always pressure in high-level sport and we have to try to react to that as best we can.”

Howe, who has lost last season’s 22-goal top scorer Lewis Grabban to Norwich, will take his players to Austria for a five-day training camp at the start of July.

They will meet Danish club FC Copenhagen in their first friendly on Friday, July 11.

Bournemouth also have friendlies against Southampton, Portsmouth, Swansea and Oxford.

Town face a testimg start to the season, with the Bournemouth clash followed by three successive away trips.

Mark Robins’ side will go to Chesterfield in the first round of the Capital One Cup before an August 16 trip to Cardiff.

Reading is the destination on Tuesday, August 19 before Charlton visit the following Saturday.
