Darren Hepworth heads into tonight’s Northern Counties East League Cup clash with Teversal at the Welfare Ground hoping to focus on football.

The Huddersfield club ended a turbulent 10 days by thumping Grimsby Borough 7-2 on Saturday to go fifth in the First Division.

Brighton Mugadza scored a hat trick and recent signing Adam Todd two in Hepworth’s first home game since his reinstatement as manager.

Having departed after a behind-the-scenes disagreement, popular Hepworth returned as chairman John Whitehead resigned.

Emley then slumped 4-0 at Bottesford Town last Wednesday, but bounced back in style against Borough.

Now they will try for a first-round win over First Division rivals Teversal, whose joint managers Jamie Hudson and Jeff Bostock have just resigned.

Emley, who beat Teversal 2-1 in a recent league game, bossed Borough throughout, and would have scored more had it not been for visiting keeper James Swann and the woodwork.

Former Stocksbridge Park Steels player Todd, signed from First Division leaders Shaw Lane Aquaforce, marked his full debut with a 13th-minute opener.

Then, when one-on-one with Swann on 23 minutes, he unselfishly passed to Mugadza, who forced the ball home.

Impressive left-back Liam Schofield got the third two minutes later, and while Borough responded through Matthew Hall, Emley were soon attacking again.

Todd turned to drill in his second on 43 minutes, then skipper Paul Sykes put away a penalty early in the second half after a handball.

Borough’s Hall bagged his second of the game, then Emley substitute Mark Crossfield headed against the bar before Mugadza completed his hat trick with two late goals.

Hepworth hailed the impact of Todd, who now has three goals for his new club.

“Adam has brought experience and an eye for goal. His enthusiasm off the pitch as well as off it is a massive plus for us,” said the boss.

“He’s a guy who I have a lot of respect for and he compliments us well.

“We have Mark Crossfield and Alex Hallam, who has been revelation since he has come to us, along with Brighton Mugadza, who showed a lot of what he can do on Saturday.

“We work the ball into good areas and we’re always looking for good delivery.

“We had Ash Flynn (now with Shaw Lane) last season and he got 42 goals so that is one thing we do at this football club is create chances.

“It is just a case of getting people who can convert them.”

TWO goals by Craig Burns helped Bay Athletic keep the pressure on West Riding County Amateur League leaders Ovenden WR.

The Huddersfield side beat top-flight newcomers Huddersfield YMCA 4-0, with Kitson Gayle and Callum Meade also on target.

Bay, with a game in hand, remain three points behind Ovenden, who won 2-1 at Hall Green United.

Fourth-placed Golcar were 4-3 derby victors at Lepton Highlanders thanks to goals by Jon Newiss (2), Wayne Dyson and Dean Johnson.

NEWSOME stayed top of the District League with a 4-0 win at Netherton while second-placed Holmbridge were 10-2 winners against Lepton Highlanders.

There were also double-figure hauls for Fourth Division duo Moorside (at Fartown Force) and Almondbury Woolpack (at Mount).
