TOWN might not have been involved in the third round of the FA Cup - but plenty of their former employees were.

Big Wayne Allison was Sheffield United's hero after coming off the bench to net their 74th-minute winner at Cardiff, who had Martyn Margetson in goal.

The 1-0 win will have the Blades' former Town boss Neil Warnock dreaming of a repeat of last season's run to the semi-finals.

Mick Jones, Warnock's assistant at Town, masterminded the big upset of the round as his Conference side Telford won 1-0 at Crewe.

Lee Mills, who played for non- League Stocksbridge before breaking into senior football with Port Vale and Wolves, scored in the second minute.

Delroy Facey made a rare outing for Bolton, and came face to face with ex-Town teammate David Beresford, in the 1-1 draw at Tranmere.

It was only a 13th Wanderers appearance for Facey, who joined the Reebok club in the summer of 2002 and has been out on loan at Burnley.

Beresford, a Town player between 1997-2001, joined Tranmere on a free from Plymouth in November.

Martin Smith, who left Town in the close season to join Third Division rivals Northampton, was on target in the 1-1 home draw with Rotherham.

His 63rd-minute leveller was his eighth goal for the Cobblers.

Welshman Iwan Roberts was a big hit at Town from 1990-93 and has been equally popular at Leicester, Wolves and current club Norwich, but became villain of the piece as Everton.

He gave away two penalties, both for fouls on Alan Stubbs, as the Division I leaders' hopes of upsetting the Premier side ended with a 3-1 defeat.

Marcus Stewart, one of Roberts' successors in the Town frontline, was in the Sunderland side which avoided a slip-up at home to Hartlepool, Julio Arca's goal earning a 1-0 win in front of a bumper 40,816 attendance, the biggest of the day.

Down the road at the Riverside, Simon Baldry was in the Notts County side beaten 2-0 by Middlesbrough. Notts, incidentally, have not renewed Steve Jenkins' short-term contract.

Meanwhile Chris Lucketti featured for Preston in their exciting 3-3 home draw with Division I rivals Reading.

Chris Senior, unable to force his way into the Town first team, had to make do with being an unused substitute as Scarborough drew 1-1 at Southend.
