SEAN HAZELDEN was sent off while Dave Heagney’s scoring streak ended as AFC Emley suffered a second successive Northern Counties East League Division I defeat at Handsworth.
While the Huddersfield side dropped to eighth, their Sheffield hosts went second courtesy of a 3-0 victory.
Seventeen-goal Heagney will be out to get back on track at Louth United tonight after failing to make the scoresheet for the first time in 15 matches.
Handsworth were one up when centre-back Hazelden was red carded early in the second half for pulling back Smith as he went through on goal.
Emley were hit by an early blow when they lost influential midfielder John Cyrus to injury, and Daniel Patterson was allowed the space to pull the strings for Handsworth.
Up front David Cockerhill and Smith were causing plenty of problems for Emley’s defenders and their new goalkeeper Adam Valente, who saved from Wes Hill before Smith finished from close range after 25 minutes.
Emley boss Darren Hepworth paired Heagney with the recently-returned Dean Wharam for the first time, but there was little in the way of service from midfield.
Valente thwarted Tom Roebuck before the visitors suffered another blow when captain Antony Leech was forced off for treatment by a knee injury.
Handsworth’s James Colliver was yellow carded for pulling back Wharam when he was through on goal – the visitors were left wondering what the difference was when Hazelden walked – and while Leech briefly reappeared, it was soon clear he couldn’t continue.
Chris Wdowczyk did well to get round the Handsworth defence before delivering a ball across the face of goal which Wharam was inches away from poking home.
However Hazelden’s first sending off in an Emley shirt was to have a major effect, with Nick Reid and Nathan Tayo having to take on unfamiliar centre-back berths.
Handsworth piled on the pressure and Cockerhill crashed a shot against the bar before Arran Horton inexplicably punted the ball into his own net under pressure from Smith.
Wharam had one strike ruled out for offside and tested Handsworth keeper Rob Poulter with a dipping 30-yarder.
But Handsworth made it three when Smith hooked in his second from close range from an 86th-minute corner.
Emley: Valente, Reid, Tayo, Cyrus (Townsend, 5mins), Hazelden, Leech (Horton, 47mins), Wdowczyk, Ingham, Heagney, Wharam, Dowling. Subs not used: Armitage, Ryan.
