EDDIE WILSON, grandson of World Cup winner Ray, led Huddersfield to their first West Riding FA Minor Cup success since 1994.

And the 2-1 victory sealed by goals from Jack Sewell and Ryan Hall denied Leeds a hat trick of successive Under 17 final triumphs at Woodlesford.

Despite a number of final appearances, Huddersfield hadn’t lifted the trophy since Barry Fella’s talented team.

But now manager Chris Haigh can match Fella’s claim.

Victories over Goole & Thorne, Heavy Woollen and Barkston Ash in the group stages and a 6-0 triumph over Keighley in the semi-final gave Haigh a third shot at lifting the cup, which is played for between the 13 district associations within the West Riding.

Huddersfield started well with Hall trying his luck from the edge of the area, but the shot was not powerful enough to trouble Leeds keeper Ceiran Gibson.

After eight minutes Leeds were on the back foot as Hall, Sewell, Oliver Murray and Josh Martin piled on the pressure.

And Leeds’ failure to deal with the speedy William Wilson was to cost them a goal when the Huddersfield midfielder pulled back a pass to the edge of the area where Sewell crafted enough room to fire into the top corner.

With Leeds chasing an equaliser the game swung rapidly from end to end and a series of corners and unnecessary free-kicks gave Huddersfield a few nervy moments.

But defenders Wilson, Tom Halton, Greg Bower and the excellent covering of Jacob Robertson kept Leeds at bay.

Huddersfield almost doubled their advantage just before the break but William Wilson’s header, from a Tom Halton cross, skimmed the top of the bar.

Another chance slipped by when, with the Leeds keeper stranded, Jordan Kennedy couldn’t quite reach another Halton cross.

A Martin free-kick set up Huddersfield’s second goal five minutes after the break.

He found Halton, whose long crossfield pass fell to Hall.

His shot was slightly mis-hit, but deceived keeper Gibson to land in the bottom corner.

Having given everything for the first hour, the large pitch started to take a serious toll and with several players clearly feeling the strain, Leeds began to take charge, giving keeper Greg Taylor a chance to show off his skills with two superb saves in as many minutes.

With the goal at his mercy, Sewell couldn’t quite connect with an attempted diving header, then Martin looked to have sealed it with a fine shot toward the bottom corner but, diving low to his right, Gibson tipped the ball away round the post.

Ashley Coffey finally pulled a goal back for Leeds deep into injury time, but Huddersfield held out.
