Going out on loan to Yeovil is a marvellous opportunity for Duane Holmes to gain experience which will stand him in good stead for the rest of his career.

Just like Jon Stead, Jake Carroll and Chris Atkinson, who are out at Oldham, Bury and Bradford respectively, it’s a chance for him to play regular league football.

Duane has done really well for us as an impact player and he has been involved in quite a few games, but this next month is a window to playing some regular league football and that has to be a good thing for his development.

No disrespect to Yeovil, but it will show Duane what things are like at a smaller club and, perhaps, reinforce to him what a terrific club he is at here at Town.

The loan will give him the time to get some 90-minute matches under his belt – if all goes to plan – and when he returns here he will not only be better prepared to play for Mark Robins, but he will also be fully match-fit as well.

Loans like this are a great idea for lads of Duane’s age at 19, and we’ve seen it’s worked to our benefit in the past.

Jack Hunt was in much the same situation as Duane when he went on loan to Chesterfield and, when he came back, he looked a completely different player to the one I had seen in the juniors and reserves.

He hadn’t been back with us for long when he played that FA Cup match at Arsenal, hit the headlines in blue and white stripes and then went on to become a promotion-winner for us.

Duane has got a lot of ability but, just at the moment, Mark hasn’t got a slot to include him at senior level. There is nothing worse for a player than to be sitting in the stands on a Saturday afternoon, so for Duane this is a really pleasing opportunity and one I know he’ll want to make the most of.

It’s not just about football experience, either, it’s also about gaining experience in life.

Living in a hotel room is not as glamorous as most people might think and being away from your normal surroundings and your usual mates can also be difficult a times, but it’s a good learning process for any young person.

I have no doubt Duane will learn a lot from working under an experienced manager like Gary Johnson, too, and hopefully he will enjoy the football. It’s not often you get the chance to go out on loan in your own division, so it’s a winning situation all round in my opinion.
