Huddersfield Town have signed Slovenian defender Jon Gorenc Stankovic on a long-term deal.

And head coach David Wagner is delighted to have landed the Under 21 international centre-back for a second time in what is regarded as a coup for the Championship club.

It’s believed Town have paid around £600,000 to Wagner’s former club Borussia Dortmund for the 20-year-old, who has been in the last two full Slovenian international squads.

The boss is a big admirer of the 6ft 3in player, who represented Slovenian club Domzale at 16 and has signed a four-year contract. with Town able to add a further 12 months.

Dortmund signed Stankovic on a three-year deal in 2014, and he developed under Wagner in the club’s second team.

The Town chief explained: “Having worked with Jon, I know he is an outstanding young talent and it is not normal that we’d get the opportunity to bring him here.

“When we did, it is great that we could move so quickly to complete the transfer.

“Jon will come in and work with the first-team group, but he will be given time to develop further.

“He has the height of a centre back and his physical side will continue to develop - he is only 20 years old.

“He is already very comfortable in possession of the ball and knows our style of play very well.

“I am excited about having Jon as part of our squad, both this season and over the next few years.”

Stankovic is the 10th senior signing by Town this summer, and the third new centre-back.

Wagner has already brought in club-record £1.8m signing Christopher Schindler from 1860 Munich and Michael Hefele from Dynamo Dresden.
