Australia teammates Jason Davidson and Tommy Oar could go head to head when Huddersfield Town face Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday – albeit on opposite flanks.

The pair linked up down the left as the Socceroos suffered a first defeat in World Cup qualifying against Jordan in Amman last Thursday.

Former West Bromwich Albion full-back Davidson, 24, has his sights on an 11th Town appearance, although the one match he has missed was following the September international break.

However Australia played two games that time, against Bangladesh in Perth and away to Tajikistan, meaning more travelling and less time to get over jet lag.

Like 21-times capped Melbourne-born Davidson, 23-year-old Queenslander Oar, who has made 27 Socceroos appearances, changed clubs in the close-season.

He joined Ipswich on a two-year contract from Dutch club FC Utrecht, where he made more than 100 appearances.

Oar’s only start so far came in the Capital One Cup third-round defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

But after catching the eye on his Championship debut, from the bench in the loss to Blackburn Rovers last time out, he could make McCarthy’s XI against Town.

The Portman Road manager, who is looking to conjure a first win in five in all competitions, said: “Tommy’s delivery was excellent in the two games he’s featured in so I’ll have to look at all that.”

With Daryl Murphy still seeking his first goal of the season, McCarthy could also reshuffle his frontline.

Murphy’s Republic of Ireland teammate David McGoldrick and Brett Pitman, a summer signing from Bournemouth, are both pressing their claims.

“There are players chomping at the bit to get in and I think Brett has been excellent for us and Didz (McGoldrick) has made a difference for us when he’s come on from the bench,” added McCarthy.

Ipswich have had other players on international duty, centre-back Christophe Berra with Scotland and midfielder Kevin Bru with Mauritius.

Meanwhile Ainsley Maitland-Niles, the 18-year-old right winger who has played 10 times on loan from Arsenal, has been with England Under 19s.
