BATTYEFORD upset the odds in the Under 18 Cup final with a 3-2 win over Netherton.

Mid-table Battyeford have struggled to find any consistency this season and two league defeats at the hands of their opponents gave no indication that Netherton's unbeaten season might come to an end.

But when Sam Sweeney gave Battyeford the lead after 15 minutes it was clear that Netherton were going to have to step up a gear to overcome the Mirfield side's determination.

An equaliser from Edward Hamlet restored Netherton's confidence and they almost took the lead just before the break, but Battyeford keeper James Lister managed to push a free kick over the bar.

Both sides produced some high-quality football but it was Battyeford who took the lead again, with the goal of the game- Sweeney's strength and speed took him past three defenders to hit the ball past Netherton keeper Oliver Jones.

But the Battyeford cheers were quickly silenced when, within a minute, Netherton captain Jordan Peel headed another equaliser.

But with extra time looming, Joel Lawson struck what proved the winner, for although Netherton piled on the pressure in the closing minutes Battyeford held on to lift the Cup.
