Facts

Huddersfield Town battled back from a goal down at high-flying Bournemouth to secure a valuable 1-1 draw, boosting their hopes of survival and denting the hosts' own promotion ambitions in the process.

Yann Kermorgant struck in the first half after a neatly-worked corner but Town showed great spirit in the second half to respond through James Vaughan as he turned home Jack Robinson's scuffed effort before Alex Smithies made stunning saves to deny both Harry Arter and Kermorgant.

Town team (4-3-3): Smithies; Smith, Hudson, Wallace, Robinson; Butterfield (Hogg, 88), Edgar, Coady; Scannell, Vaughan (Miller, 84), Bunn. Not used: Murphy, Lolley, Wells, Gobern, Wright.

Analysis

Town show great defensive resilience - When the hosts took a 16th-minute lead, you could forgive the travelling 391 Town fans for fearing the worst given the Cherries' well-documented firepower but they needn't have.

Town frustrated their hosts with some committed defensive work and always posed a threat on the counter attack, something which finally paid dividends when Vaughan stretched every sinew to turn the ball beyond a stunned Artur Boruc as the Cherries were left exasperated by their inability to break through.

Main man

Alex Smithies - Deserves huge credit for keeping the home side out having made some fantastic stops and he was also extremely decisive when it came to dealing with crosses into the area as Bournemouth looked to find the likes of Kermorgant and substitute Brett Pitman.

He looked inspired and determined to keep Eddie Howe's side at bay and it laid the foundations for a smash-and-grab raid point which was considered unlikely by most inside the Goldsands Stadium prior to kick-off.

Bigger picture

Away form continues to improve - Town have shown in recent games that they do have the ability and, importantly, the know-how to grind out results away from home and this was proof in the pudding.

When the onus has been placed on Town to attack at home in recent times, they have crumbled under the pressure, but here they carried out a similar gameplan to the one Wolves utilised in midweek to make sure it was they who came out with their heads held high having denied a Championship title chaser.
