Brighouse Town are preparing for life in the Northern Premier League.

A 2-0 home win over Retford United, sealed by goals from top scorer Tom Matthews and skipper Leon Henry and watched by 331, ensured the Northern Counties East League title is coming to the Dual Seal Stadium.

Now manager Paul Quinn, whose side host Bridlington Town today (3.00) before finishing their season with a return game at Brid on Saturday, wants Brighouse to become the first club in NCEL history to reach 100 points.

They are on 98 after clinching a 31st win of the season and taking their goal haul to 132, of which 36 have been scored by Matthews, who has 42 in all competitions.

Brighouse’s success comes 12 months after they were pipped to the title by Scarborough and 25 years after Quinn’s dad Gerry led Emley into the NPL as NCEL champions.

Appointed partway through the 2011-12 season, Quinn, the grandson of former Huddersfield Town boss Ian Greaves who cut his managerial teeth with Kirkburton in the West Riding County Amateur League, said: “It’s a proud moment.

“I’m delighted for everyone at the club, because it has been a real all-round effort, and after reaching 97 points last season only to miss out, the players have done so well to bounce back.

“We celebrated on Saturday, but the season’s not over yet, and reaching 100 points is our objective.

“After that, we’ll start preparing for next season, because we know we face big challenges in the Evo-Stik (Northern Premier) League.

“I’ve watched a lot of football at that level, and we have been building a squad with promotion in mind, but we know we’ll have to find our feet.”
