INJURIES to Andy Booth and Lucas Akins meant a big matchday call-up for Academy frontman Danny Broadbent.

The Birstall-based 17-year-old didn’t get off the bench, but boss Andy Ritchie said: “It will still have been a great experience for him.”

Booth picked up a back strain during Wednesday’s 3-3 Reserve draw with Morecambe, when second-year Academy player Broadbent scored twice.

Akins, a first-year professional who has figured four times as a substitute this season, is recovering from an ankle injury.

“Boothy’s back stiffened up on Friday and Lucas isn’t yet ready to return,” said Ritchie.

“Broady’s been doing really well in the Reserves this season, and Saturday’s call-up was a reward for his hard work.”

Broadbent is a junior England international in both football and cricket (he plays the summer game for Liversedge).
