Huddersfield Town’s last Capital One Cup tie, a second-round clash in August of last year, ended in a 2-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest.

Now they will aim to topple Forest’s rivals from across the River Trent, Notts County, in round one and embark on a longed-for cup run.

Memorable nights in this competition have been few and far between as far as Town are concerned.

While the League Cup has been in existence since 1960-61, they have only got beyond the second round on 11 occasions.

And on eight of them, their interest has ended at round three.

Last time Town made round four, in 1999-2000, they beat Notts en-route.

With the second round played over two legs, they were 4-3 aggregate winners.

Clyde Wijnhard and Marcus Stewart scored in a 2-1 home win for Town.

And Kenny Irons and Dean Gorre were on target in the following 2-2 draw at Meadow Lane.

It was Irons who popped up to lash home the only goal of the third-round tie at Chelsea (Town lost at home to the original Wimbledon in round four).

And wouldn’t it be great if Town could face, and beat, Premier League opposition this time?

Of course League II Notts, managed by Dutchman Ricardo Moniz, must be seen off first.

The 50-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur coach took over from Shaun Derry in April.

With only six games remaining, he was unable to save his new charges from relegation from League I.

Hopes are high that Moniz, who steered Red Bull Salzburg to an Austrian league and cup double in 2012, can work some magic at Meadow Lane.

But he’ll have to do it without experienced frontman Garry Thompson.

Last season’s 12-goal top-scorer has joined Wycombe Wanderers. But Moniz can call on former Town frontman Jimmy Spencer.

The 23-year-old academy product moved to the East Midlands club during the January 2014 transfer window after two Town appearances and loan spells at Morecambe, Cheltenham Town, Brentford, Crawley Town and Scunthorpe United.

He was sidelined by a ruptured knee ligament suffered during a friendly last pre-season.

But Spencer returned to the team in March, making nine appearances and scoring once.

It’s an overall Notts tally of six for Spencer, who made his sole Town start in the 2-0 League Cup first-round defeat at Preston North End in 2012.

While Town’s best League Cup run was to the semi-finals of 1967-68, Notts have three times made the quarters, in 1963-64, 1972-73 and 1975-76.

There have been 33 league and cup meetings between the pair down the years.

Town have 15 wins and Notts 11, their last in Huddersfield coming in 1989-90, when they were 2-1 Division III (now League I) winners.
