The Championship season may have come to a close, but there is still plenty going on in the second tier of English football, with four teams in play-off action this weekend looking to secure the third promotion slot to join champions Bournemouth and Watford in the Premier League.

Norwich City and Middlesbrough, who finished third and fourth respectively, hold the upper hand in their ties, with the Canaries securing a 1-1 draw at East Anglian rivals Ipswich Town while Middlesbrough secured a late win at Brentford thanks to a Fernando Amorebieta winner.

The defender, on loan from the Bees' west London neighbours Fulham, fired home through a crowd to give the Teessiders an advantage ahead of the second leg tonight, after Jelle Vossen and Andre Gray had traded goals.

In the other play-off semi-final, favourites Norwich took the lead through Jonny Howson's first-half strike but the Canaries were immediately pegged back by a Paul Anderson leveller for Mick McCarthy's men. The second leg takes place tomorrow lunchtime.

Meanwhile, Jermaine Beckford, Andy Lonergan, Matt Mills and Craig Davies are the headline names to be released at Bolton Wanderers and the Football League have ruled that the result of the abandoned final-day clash between Blackpool and Huddersfield Town will stand at 0-0.
