Chris Powell acknowledges his squad-building work at Huddersfield Town is far from over.

The latest roster at PPG Canalside includes five loan players in addition to permanent summer arrivals Dean Whitehead, Jason Davidson, Martin Cranie and youthful duo Kyle Dempsey and Jordy Hiwula.

“I had to act because of Jacob Butterfield and Alex Smithies leaving and a couple of injuries affecting us on top of that,” said Powell.

“I always wanted to boost the squad from last year but wasn’t in a position to do it, so we brought in a few frees and a couple of younger lads we felt would have good futures.

“We needed to get on with the job in hand with lads who have played at this level, and they have definitely galvanised us in the short term.

“But I am constantly thinking about January and beyond and hoping some of the players we have will be involved. We have to plan ahead with them and, if not, maybe do something else if and when we have to.

“No-one should be getting carried away thinking that’s the squad done. We are still a work in progress, we really are.”

Powell explained the loan signings and options with them further down the line.

Elliott Ward is here for a month but, in a good bit of work by us, we do have the option to extend it and we’ve sort of said we’ll look at it again with Bournemouth after the initial month,” said the boss.

Town loan keeper Jed Steer

Jed Steer is here for a month because of the injury to Joe Murphy, and we’ll see where we go with that when we know exactly how Joe is progressing.

Jamie Paterson is here for the season from Nottingham Forest without a break, while Emyr Huws and Mustapha Carayol are here on season-long loans but both have a break in January, when it will be up to ourselves and their parent clubs (Wigan Athletic and Middlesbrough) to discuss things and see whether they stay or whether they go.”
