Chris Powell began work as Huddersfield Town manager by holding a series of meetings with his coaching staff and overseeing his first training session at PPG Canalside.

While his old Charlton Athletic sidekick Alex Dyer is on board at Town, Powell will also work with Steve Thompson, who is being linked with the managerial vacancy at Carlisle United, and Steve Eyre.

Thompson became assistant manager and Eyre first-team coach during the close-season and worked alongside Mark Lillis to steady the ship after Mark Robins’ departure.

“Alex Dyer is a good ally,” explained Powell of the former Town player (he featured in the 1997-98 Great Escape season).

“People will like him – he is an infectious character – but also a good coach and confidant for me.

“But the staff already here are very important too.”

The players will now have three days off, and Powell will begin the build-up to his first match in charge, at home to Middlesbrough next Saturday, on Monday morning.

He will be armed with statistics supplied by the club’s head of sports science Al Stewart, who has run a series of tests on players this week.

Powell is also checking the fitness of Lee Peltier and Tommy Smith (both groin), Jonathan Hogg (knee), Anthony Gerrard (calf), Joe Lolley (hip), Oscar Gobern (toe) and Martin Paterson (knee).
