Joe Murphy says Nick Colgan’s promotion to first-team goalkeeping coach was a big pull in his decision to join Huddersfield Town.

The two have been alongside each other in many Republic of Ireland squads.

Murphy came on as a substitute for Colgan to win the first of his two caps in the 2-2 draw with Turkey in Dublin in September 2003.

The 32-year-old ex-Tranmere, West Brom, Walsall, Sunderland and Scunthorpe player, who has agreed a two-year contract, also played under Town boss Mark Robins at Coventry.

“The manager did a great job at Coventry, and as soon as he came on asking me about joining Huddersfield, I wanted to listen,” said Murphy.

“Nick and myself go back a long way, and it was good to speak to him about the club as well.

“I think he’ll make a great coach, because he has both the experience and the ability to put his ideas across.

“It’s an important relationships between the keepers and the coach, because you spend so much time together.

“Nick has some interesting ideas, and I’m sure he’ll help us all develop.”

The players return at the end of the month, and Murphy added: “I’m looking forward to meeting everyone.

“There’s always a little bit of nervousness about going into a dressing room for the first time.

“But it’s a situation I’ve been in quite a few times before, and to be able to have the whole of pre-season is great.”
