CUMBERWORTH regained their hold on the District League's Groom Cup with a penalty shoot-out win over Westend at the YMCA ground, Laund Hill, last night.

Winners of the Cup in 2000, Cumberworth were well worth their victory despite having to wait until the penalty shoot-out to prove their superiority.

They knocked in all their five penalties whereas Westend missed one of theirs after the sides had drawn 1-1 in 120 minutes.

Cumberworth made a great start and Jon Garthwaite had the ball in the net after only four minutes. He latched onto a through ball on the right and lobbed the keeper as he came off his line.

And from then on Cumberworth were in charge. They never gave Westend a look in, being eager for victory, quicker to the ball and sharper in the tackle.

The only surprise at half time was that it was still only 1-0, as Cumberworth dominated the half.

They created numerous good chances but Caine Bowker, Craig Bentley, Dave Dunn and Garthwaite among others failed to put them away.

But when Toyan Greaves put Westend level within six minutes of the restart, with another fine lobbed goal as the keeper came off his line, it appeared that Westend could be on their way back.

They were, and played much better in the second half but they never really created any clear-cut chances and Jordan Robinson in the Cumberworth goal was never really threatened, whereas Cumberworth created chances with winger Bentley a real handful, and he hit the bar directly from a corner with Daniel Hadfield beaten.

Cumberworth were also solid at the back and trophy presenters Russell and Pat Peters chose centre-back Liam Doran as their man-of-the-match.

But, it was all down to a shoot-out, and this time Cumberworth made up for their earlier misses by being spot on, and when Jordan Robinson saved Dean Knox's penalty with his legs there was no way back this time.
