Phil Billing has had one small taste of Championship action with Huddersfield Town, but it’s unlikely to be the last according to manager Mark Robins.

The 6ft 4in teenage midfielder from Denmark made his debut as a substitute in last season’s league clash with Leicester City at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Billing, 18, has played a full part in Town’s pre-season having signed senior terms and he impressed alongside Oliver Norwood in the 4-1 victory against Guiseley which followed the squad’s return from Portugal.

“It’s great to see Phil doing so well,” said Robins, who took his side to Scunthorpe on Saturday and is now looking forward to Sheffield United on Tuesday.

“He is such a talented footballer that he’s one of those where you try and keep a lid on things.

“What he needs to do now is work his socks off so that his ability can flourish.”

He has already helped the Under 18s win two league trophies and reach the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup.

Robins believes Billing – who previously played for Esbjerg and was first invited for trial early last year – has benefited from Town’s so-called ‘one club’ policy of having all age groups together at PPG Canalside.

“That mentality and vision means the older lads are mentors for the younger ones coming through and we’ve got some good ones,” said Robins.
