Huddersfield Town Under-21's held off a late Sheffield United fightback to seal a 3-2 win in their Professional Development U21 League 2 match thanks to goals from Danny Ward (2) and Ronan Coughlan.

Town raced into a three-goal lead but the Blades twice pegged them back to leave the Terriers sweating late on.

But the second-string side were able to bounce back to winning ways after a 1-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic last time out with Ward getting the ball rolling inside 10 minutes.

The 23-year-old, one of three permitted over-age players to receive a run-out, opened the scoring from six yards out before Frankie Bunn's side doubled their advantage right on the stroke of half-time.

Ward helped himself to a second with a well-placed volley after good work from Danish teen Philip Billing, who robbed the hosts of possession and surged forward before slipping the ball to the frontman to slot home and put Town in a commanding position.

They strengthened their grip on the game midway through the second half courtesy of Couglan, who came off the bench and struck with effectively his first touch after replacing Martin Paterson, following in after Flo Bojaj's initial effort had been parried to notch his first goal at this level.

The Blades, however, refused to lie down as they went in search of consecutive home wins and responded with just over 20 minutes to go as striker Jamie McDonagh slammed home at the second attempt from a corner.

Midfielder Ben Whiteman reduced the arrears further from the penalty spot to set up a tense finale but Bunn's side held on to register a seventh win in 10 matches this term.
