David Wagner will mark his 100th day in charge of Huddersfield Town by plotting a seventh win in his 16th Championship match at the helm.

Town, in 17th, might be only two places higher up the table than when the German took control.

But they have three times as many wins and 20 more points as they did when he was unveiled on November 9.

And there is no disguising the air of optimism among supporters as Saturday’s visit of Wolves looms.

They are enjoying the full-throttle football brought across Europe from Wagner’s time in charge of Borussia Dortmund II.

And they are loving the way the head coach has got more out of the likes of Joe Lolley, Jamie Paterson and emerging talent Philip Billing.

Town are still a work in progress, as that recent run of four defeats running in all competitions shows.

But there’s no doubt the former US international striker has prised that bit extra out of most of the players he inherited.

It’s partly down to the fitness levels which have resulted from his different approach to training (sometimes two sessions a day and a regular 3.00 to reflect kick-offs).

But it also reflects the tactical work undertaken by Wagner, his right-hand man Christoph Buehler and first-team coach Mike Marsh.

Town have been creating plenty of chances and have failed to score in just one of Wagner’s 17 matches in all competitions.

There is plenty of scope for improvement at the other end, but the clean sheet in victory at Nottingham Forest is encouraging.

Dean Hoyle took a different direction when, having parted company with Chris Powell, he made his fifth change of team chief as the man in overall charge.

The early signs are encouraging and Town look more than capable of erasing any worries of being drawn into a relegation scrap.

Then Wagner can utilise a transfer kitty to put his own stamp on the squad during what should be a valuable close-season.
