Dean Whitehead says he is enjoying skippering Huddersfield Town – but is quick to point out it is only a short-term role.

The former Middlesbrough midfielder has led the side for the last four games in the absence of Mark Hudson.

Centre-back Hudson is back in full training after his ankle injury, and could return for Saturday’s Sky-televised lunchtime clash at Wolves (12.30).

And if that happens, Whitehead will happily hand the armband back to the former Cardiff City player.

Town, 16th in the Championship, aim for a third win in four at Molineux, and Whitehead said: “The main thing is that we keep playing well as a team.

“I like the responsibility of being captain, and of course I like to win games, but I am only standing in for Huddy.”

Whitehead welcomed teammate Emyr Huws’ call-up by Wales for their Euro qualifiers in Bosnia-Herzegovina and against Andorra at Cardiff.

The on-loan Wigan Athletic star has notched four times in three Town games and will look to add to his four international caps as Wales seek the point required to make sure of a place in next summer’s Euro finals in France.

“Emyr has come in and done really well, and goalscoring midfielders are sought after,” explained Whitehead.

“He has a big future and it’s great to have him with us.”

Wolves are 10th after Tuesday’s 3-0 win at 10-man Fulham and Whitehead added: “It’s a tough place to go, but we are playing well and we are well prepared and ready.”
