Huddersfield Town have had four previous Youth Cup meetings with Manchester United.

The first came in the 1956-57 season, when more than 2,000 turned out at Beck Lane, Town’s former junior ground at Heckmondwike, for the second-round tie.

Town had put six without reply past Oldham at the previous stage, but United proved too strong, running out 4-2 winners despite an inspired display by top Town talent Denis Law.

Legend has it that watching United manager Matt Busby was so impressed, he immediately offered £10,000 for the Scottish youngster.

Town turned down the cash, and Busby had to wait another five years to land his man, this time paying Italian club Torino £115,000, a British transfer record.

Having seen off Town, United went on to lift the Youth Cup for the fifth time in a row, beating West Ham in a two-legged final.

Town’s kids made successive trips to Old Trafford in the sixites.

There were 8,000 in the ground to see United win 3-0 in the 1966-67 third round while in 67-68, 4,000 witnessed a 2-0 home win in round two, when the Town team included Geoff Hut and Bobby Hoy.

Town’s only triumph over United came in 1973-74, when the effort invested in Town’s youth system by then manager Ian Greaves, a former Old Trafford player, was starting to take effect.

After defeating Doncaster, Bradford City, Burnley and Charlton, the sides were pitted in a quarter-final clash at Leeds Road.

Town progressed through Franny Firth and an own goal, and defeated West Brom 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals to seal their only final appearance to date, Spurs winning 2-1 over two legs.

Town made it to the semi-final the next season, when they lost 4-0 on aggregate to Ipswich.
